EVENT #04: THE GREAT SEA HUNT

With sharpened blades and loaded rifles, the Corsairs fan out across the Eternal Ocean. The Great Sea Hunt has begun once again. As the seas froth angrily from the horde of sea monsters, Corsair ships cut a path through. As the din of battle erupts across the Ocean, the Vault is undergoing heavy activity as other Corsairs begin preparing their grand feast.With the defeat of an Imperial Legion in their belts, all Corsairs are eager to make this hunt and this feast one to remember.

There will be open logs for each major category, as well as a wild card option for players to make their own. While these logs are roughly broken into roles, characters are free to tag in and out of whichever posts suit their fancy. The missions from planning and descriptions are repeated here for convenience:

MISSIONS

Monster Investigation: Characters will investigate where sea monsters are gathering for easier and more efficient culling.

MONSTER INVESTIGATION

Donnie had gone over reports of sightings, mostly those by word of mouth, marking off a few areas that sounded promising. Now as he perches on the railing of one of the small ships heading out to one such area, he scans the waters ahead, eyeing the whitecaps for signs of fins or agitated fish activity.

Winter hasn't even truly set in yet, but he can feel the chilly edge of it in the breeze, cutting through his jacket. Given he knows he's going to be underwater for a bit, he hasn't dressed as heavily as he would for this time of the season, but at least the waters wouldn't be too cold. It's the part about coming back out of the water that he hates, but that's a problem for future!Donnie to deal with.

Lowering his goggles, Donnie fixates upon one area in particular. Seabirds circle and dive at the flurry of silvery movement amidst the waves. He adjusts the lenses to zoom in, catching a glimpse of something slithering back into the waters.

"Two o'clock," he says. "I think we should hang back here. I'll go scout and see if it's just passing through or if there's a lair nearby."

"Do you want help with scouting?" Ilphyl does have magic that would let them withstand the elements better, but they aren't bothering with it as long as good winter clothing does the job. Especially as they know being cold and wet could seriously endanger people, and they might be needed.

Noctis is no stranger to boats and fishing. In fact, it's his favorite hobby. However, he's not enthused about jumping into freezing waters, so he'll let Donnie scout ahead with no complaints. That doesn't mean he won't be ready to back him up.

"You got it. But if there's any sign of trouble, I got your back."

Ziel pulled the group of hunters aside before they headed out. He looked serious, instead of merely grumpy or tired.

"Before we go hunt down some monsters, I really need you to understand that there are some things out there you can't fight. Some monsters that, even if you kill them, will cause so much death and destruction in the battle that no one will feel like celebrating afterwards. If we find something like that, we're not going to mark it down. We're going to turn around and leave without bothering it. Is that understood?"

Ziel doesn't actually have any authority here, but he sure sounds like he does.

Harlock sat on the edge of the group, arms folded across his chest as Ziel gave the warning talk - aware of his lack of authority but recognizing the soundness of his advice.

While others gave sounds of affirmation, grumbles that they know what they're doing, or waves of inattentiveness, the pirate gave a curt nod of understanding before he pushes himself off the dock, keeping an eye on the ones who didn't seem to have paid too much heed as he starts boarding the ship.

"How do we know which ones are those specific ones?" Noctis asks curiously. "And wouldn't it be better to take something that dangerous out before a bunch of people get hurt?"

When Link wants to get eyes on something, to watch and observe, there's always one way he wants to go:

Up.

Fortunately, the Corsairs had been willing to lend a small airship to scout out the sea monster sightings. So now as the ship gracefully sailed over the oceans, Link was right at the railings - and leaning far out as he peers down into the waters. To a point that would make most people rather nervous.

Clearly, Link wasn't one to have a fear of heights.

The airship was *very* small, as such things went-and it was provided with, as well as an ether crystal for lift, a large balloon full of some sort of gas, and wing-like sails spreading out to the port and starboard. It was so small, in fact, that as Link leaned out, Angelika had to work the wheel a bit in the opposite direction, turning both wings slightly to bring them back onto course.

"Careful, you're not tied into anything..." Of course, if he wanted a better view, the wings, their jibs, and the lines that moved them were there, inviting a sure-footed sky-sailor out to see what was right below his feet.

Yuki has not only turned human, but also transformed into her magical girl form in preparation for this. She didn't mention a thing to anybody, simply showed up to the ships before they began heading out and got on board.

So there's a white-haired girl in the frilliest outfit you can imagine just chilling and watching the water with a mix of trepidation and determination. Does she belong on this ship? She looks like she's ready for a party, not fighting monsters!

Senshi isn't too fussed about the girl's appearance, having worked with magi in stranger and with adults who seemed like children in his old dungeoneering party. He looks pretty stupid himself, bundled up in a hooded grippli-hide winter raincoat himself.

But for all that, he's brandishing an axe and loaded a harpoon into the deck gun of the Milk Run, so he does have to ask.

"What's your plan? Not sure what kinds of weapons or spells you're packin'."

Gohan is wearing a stripped-down version of his Great Saiyaman costume -- just the black bodysuit with white gloves and boots. Since this is in preparation for winter, he expects the sea to be cold, but at the same time, he wants to make sure he doesn't have any bulk slowing him down. This outfit thus seemed to him like a good compromise when he figured it out.

At the moment, he's doing some stretches and basic calisthenics to loosen his muscles and warm up for what he's about to do. It's during these that he spots Yuki nearby on the deck, looking out over the water. At first, he can't help but wonder if she's a newcomer, and if he should go over and introduce himself, though he feels shy about doing so. Then he gets a better look at the expression on her face and sees what seems to be concern. With that, he decides to walk over, though he's currently stretching his left shoulder as he does so.

"Hi, um, are you all right? You look a little...nervous, I guess."

Deedee Yeowoo stands with one foot on the unicorn figurehead of her ride - a whaling ship out of Flotsam - smiling slightly at the memory of a similar one, her red hair and three cream-tipped tails fluttering in the wind along with her red and black belt.

She’s meditating, breathing deep, extending her senses - imbuing a glaive with an extension of her aura, her breath, her Ether.

“One I harpoon our prey, I’ll need help hauling it back and nicking it to death,” Deedee says, oddly calm and composed. “Let’s go over the plan again, make sure we’re ready for it.”

Angelika is quite a bit back from the figurehead-or the bowsprit, and in fact, has tied a line around her to form a harness in case she falls overboard. Unlike a certain vixen, she has absolutely no confidence in her ability to do without this basic safety measure.

They are both small storms of ether, though, hers a quiet spring to the gathering storm of Deedee's essence.

"I can try to bind smaller creatures with water, but larger ones will simply overpower my magic." Angelika shrugged and then gestured with her baton. "Conventional hauling is a bit beyond my arms, but I have a few options for damaging larger and tougher beasts."

A decent number of Flotsam Corsairs had previously seen Atom flying, and some of them also knew about his underwater salvaging without spells. So a few of them had the idea to approach him and ask him to help them lure their sea monster prey closer to the ships. Eager to help, and confident in his speed, Atom agreed to play bait.

It worked alright. Blinking a light at one of the sea monsters caught its attention immediately, and it darted for him. Atom fired up his feet blasters and led it as planned towards the Flotsam ships and the waiting hunters.

Problem is, this sea monster is much faster than expected, and its large size makes it strong enough to heave its head above water to snap like a giant snake at the flying robot. The flames shooting from his feet does nothing to deter such a large beast, and Atom makes the rookie mistake of glancing back to catch a view of the inside of the monster's maw with all its layers of teeth. He might not be digestible, but getting eaten is still a frightening thought.

"A little help?!" Atom shouts as he nearly gets snapped up with the monster's second strike. He's starting to regret being so gung-ho to volunteer this time.

[ ooc: Feel free to approach this prompt with dead seriousness or comedy in mind. Whatever you're feeling! I'm also open to a scene with multiple players if anyone wants to form a group. Full disclosure: no, I do not plan for Atom to die via sea monster. If he gets swallowed, he will escape somehow. ]

Link was moving even before Atom cried for help.

He runs across the deck of the ship. Leaps off, as it sails by the beast. And in the middle of the air, draws his Sword.

The Sword. The one with the purple winged hilt, that Atom himself helped Link to retrieve. The one that only Link himself could wield. And wield it he does, as he stabs down - and right into the beast's nose as he lands.

Which means now Link's holding on for dear life to the Sword that Seals the Darkness as it's embedded into the monster's nose. It's kinda like that one time with Zelda, when she was the Light Dragon. Except with extra potential for drowning.

Good thing Link has plenty of stamina?

[1. Before the Hunt]

Before the hunt begins, Gohan can be found on the deck, clad in a black bodysuit and white gloves and boots. He's currently busy stretching and doing some calisthenics to keep his muscles loose and to get him warmed up for the hunt itself, though at the same time, he's watching his surroundings, from the ocean to the other people on the ship.


[2. During the Hunt]

Once the ship reaches its destination, Gohan takes a deep breath and then dives straight into the sea. The cold water is a shock to the system at first, but he's able to power through it thanks to his warm-ups and begins searching for sea creatures. It takes a while, but he eventually spots one, and immediately launches himself at it, ready to fight.

Moments later, the surface of the ocean erupts in a column of water and steam. It clears to reveal a sea monster being launched into the air, followed by Gohan, now in his Super Saiyan form. He vanishes, then reappears above the monster, lands another strike, then vanishes and reappears on its new trajectory, where he catches it. Now that it's been subdued, it's not a threat, so he lands on the ship and carefully places its body on the deck.

"There's one!"


[3. After the hunt]

At this point, Gohan is below deck. He's got himself wrapped up in a towel and holding a mug of hot tea. After spending so much time in the cold water, he's just focusing on getting himself warmed back up.

There is, of course, a great deal of work to do to prepare for a party, even if it's one everyone wants to help with. Many tasks have to be done before anyone can light the first cooking fire, or set the first plate upon a table. Heck, simply ensuring there are tables is a task to organize in and of itself. Even if the tables are simply sawhorses supporting long planks, someone needs to count the sawhorses and the planks, and make sure they're stored where they can be gotten to.

Somehow, this has fallen on Angelika's head. But she's bearing up as best she can-making lists, inspecting spaces, checking out the various cupboards and closets. She's even investigating the gigantic abattoirs needed to slaughter and butcher a massive sea creature, sharpening giant glaives to cut them into sections, and checking that the drains for blood flow freely. It's not glorious or noteworthy work to many, but she's bearing up under the load and making sure that when the time comes, everything is in place, and everyone knows where those places are.

And, of course, it's work that intersects with nearly every step of the process, from hunter, to butcher, to chef, to guest.

Senshi is in his element and having the time of his life as he prepares a menu and acts as a chef, supervising himself and others in cooking. It’s a tremendous amount of work, but it’s work he enjoys - though he’ll ask for an army of helpers.

“Here’s what we’re going to need to do,” he says. “We need folks peeling and chopping vegetables - more onion, celery and carrot than you think we’ll need, with taters, cabbage, tomatoes and fruit besides.”

“We’ll need folks assembling salads and cooking vegetables. Green beans, braised cabbage, and mashed roots will go great with our mains.”

“We’ll need folks churning ice cream - a lot of ice cream. Take turns at the crank, we’ll make a few flavors. We’ve got loads of honey and fruit.”

“There’s bread and pies. We’ll need a lot of bread and pie, and to keep the central oven roaring hot. We’ll also put our soup and stewpots in that oven, sealed into iron pots with lids. Need a lot of charcoal and wood for that operation too.”

“And then there’s our pieces de resistance if you will - pot roasted Leviathan, and Kraken and vegetable tempura. Gonna need expert knifework for both of them, strong folk to sear a huge cut for the Leviathan shoulder and carrying the pot, and someone patient and observant to fry the kraken just right.”

“We got a huge job ahead of us, but we have a plan and everything we need. I know we can do it. Who’s with me?”

While he wasn't the only one in his office sympathetic to the Corsairs, he was perhaps the only one willing to stick his neck this far out.

A few checkmarks, a few ambiguously written numbers, a little horse-trading among other bureaucrats, and some inattentive lords signing, and a shipment of cheeses and fruits allegedly infested with rats is ripe for the taking - now it's a matter of getting them out without drawing attention to the fact there really isn't any sign of rattus rattus visitations in that particular warehouse.

"Remember, d-d-don't let the guards get a good look at the crates, just take what I marked." He cautions as the lead the would-be movers to the spot.
