EVENT #04: THE GREAT SEA HUNT

With sharpened blades and loaded rifles, the Corsairs fan out across the Eternal Ocean. The Great Sea Hunt has begun once again. As the seas froth angrily from the horde of sea monsters, Corsair ships cut a path through. As the din of battle erupts across the Ocean, the Vault is undergoing heavy activity as other Corsairs begin preparing their grand feast. With the defeat of an Imperial Legion in their belts, all Corsairs are eager to make this hunt and this feast one to remember.

Harlock sat on the edge of the group, arms folded across his chest as Ziel gave the warning talk - aware of his lack of authority but recognizing the soundness of his advice.

While others gave sounds of affirmation, grumbles that they know what they're doing, or waves of inattentiveness, the pirate gave a curt nod of understanding before he pushes himself off the dock, keeping an eye on the ones who didn't seem to have paid too much heed as he starts boarding the ship.

Ziel watched everyone filter away from him with vague disinterest in his words and sighed. Then he shouldered his hammer and trudged onto the ship. Maybe the warning would do something. Maybe there wouldn't be any problems at all.

He set his stuff down on the deck and leaned against the rail, content to wait in this out of the way corner until he was needed. He wasn't a sailor, after all. The last thing he needed was people yelling at him for being in the way.

After a minute of silence he glanced over at Harlock, who he had noticed actually listening to him earlier and gave a vague nod back. In so much as Ziel liked anyone, he felt like Harlock was an easy enough person to get along with.

Harlock gives a look of acknowledgment as he falls in, while he was no seasoned expert - he had been spending much of his free time learning the ropes, literally in this case. Often this means doing the hauling and pulling of rigging, the sails raising and slowly unfurling to catch the wind.

When the ship is in full sail, sailors and hunters started to disperse, Harlock leaned against the rail, watching the sea as he quietly rubbed the palms of his hands, tching quietly to himself.

Ziel stared out towards the horizon. He felt better with solid ground beneath his feet, but time and exposure had gotten him past the point where he spent every sea voyage leaning out over the railing retching and looking green in the face, instead of just in his horns.

Eventually, since Harlock was just standing there, he felt the need to say something.

"...I just don't want anyone going into a fight they can't win, is all. It's wasteful."

He glances over as he steps up onto the railing, a hand grasping a rope, letting the wind whip through his hair.

"Being young means being hungry to prove oneself," he replies with a kind of quiet meditativeness. "And lacking the experience to tell between a fight worth having and which is pointless."

The words trail off, followed by a long-suffering sigh.

“They’ll learn.” Ziel said, confidently. After a moment’s pause he added on, “Or they’ll die. One of those.”

He sighed. “Either way, I’ll do what I can. Somehow, they tricked me into actually caring about this mess of a revolution.”

"Funny how that happens," Harlock closed his good eye, inhaling the briny air. "The heart will do as it wants, damn the consequences."

"I mainly joined because I want my ship back," Slowly his gaze turns back to the sea, willing his vision to clear itself of a crackling of non-existent lightning to focus on the horizon.

"Sut, Sut!" The otterkin captain called out. "Bad thing for you furless types to be starin' at the sea too much, makes you sorts barmy, especially you one-eyed." with that she half-scurried, half-darted across the deck, telling some of the cocky young sailors to get off their tails and inspect the harpoon guns.

As she went out of earshot, Harlock simply laughed.

Ziel blinked at the sudden barrage of maritime superstition directed at him. The captain was out of earshot shouting at someone else before he could think of a response so he just stood there with a blank look for a moment.

Then, he let out a sound that might, charitably, be called an amused snort.

"Of all the things that could finally drive me mad, the sea is as good as anything else."

"Well, seems to be a common one between our worlds, that madness is said why sailors mistake sea cows for mermaids, back when we had wildlife in the sea." He folds his arms across his chest, pausing when he catches movement on the edge of his vision.

Sea birds - hundreds of them - circling in the distance.
