EVENT #03: WAR ORDER - EXTERMINATION EXECUTION LOG

The Imperial attack strikes like a thunderclap. In the traditional sense, a Legion is comprised of 1,000 men. In the Imperial reckoning, each individual legion holds a variety of troops - while some may have their own specialties, all legions are formidable and versatile fighting forces.

The legion that sweeps over the mine is an artillery-focused legion. A flight of airships descend upon the mine and starts raining devastation upon the facility. While the mine itself is left intact, an airship with heavy shock troopers lands in front of it, the soldiers immediately entering the mine and sealing off the entrances and exits to preserve the facility and slay all within.

The legion that attacks Flotsam is an Armor Legion, and the flight darkens the skies as carrier airships and a swarm of armors descend upon the floating city. As the Corsairs launch their coordinated counterattack, they know in their hearts that successfully mounting this defense will be among the most difficult things they have ever done.

ALL CORSAIRS

Mine Defense Gunners: Corsairs will need to man the defense arsenal installed in the mines to strike back as much as they can against the Legion, before retreating to safety.
Conflict: The Legion will do their best to destroy all present artillery, characters will need to dodge the shelling.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, your thread header should read MINE DEFENSE GUNNERS.
Region: Hesaeth

Mine Evacuation and Destruction: Corsairs will need to evacuate any remaining personnel to the tunnels before collapsing them, as well as ensuring that the secret of the Corsair submersibles is not given to the Empire.
Conflict: The mine is crawling with Heavy Shock Troopers with orders to kill everyone on sight. Corsairs will need to evade or fight these troopers as they evacuate the final remaining personnel and bring the mine down on their heads.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, your thread header should read either MINE EVACUATION AND DESTRUCTION.
Region: Hesaeth

Defense of Flotsam: Flotsam is under heavy fire from the Legion, they must be fought back here and now. This log can take any number of permutations depending on how a character chooses to fight. All captured Armors will be made available for PC use for this fight, and can be claimed in this thread. All Flotsam airships will also be active in this fight and may be incorporated into the log. Flotsam’s sea ships are all generally armed with a hodgepodge of weaponry which will be utilized in this attack.
Conflict: A Legion is trying to destroy every last ship in the fleet and send you all to the bottom of the Eternal Ocean, and they have the firepower to back this up. The Legion consists of 7 carrier airships and 200 armors, as well as 800 general crew and landing forces. It will take all of the Corsair’s might to beat them back.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, your thread header should read DEFENSE OF FLOTSAM.
Region: Flotsam

Imperial Witch: A young girl with flowing green hair and empty, soulless eyes descends upon Flotsam. Upon her head rests an ornate bronze crown, and her Armor is like a ferocious beast. At her command, fire rises to her call - and she leaves naught but devastation and ash in her wake.
Conflict: This is a villain plot with a PC villain character - up to 4 characters may sign up for this plot on a first-come first-serve basis and the PC Villain will control the flow of the log. In general, the PC Villain will tag after all active participants, or after 24 hours have passed, whichever comes first.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, post in the sign-up thread and tag into the appropriate top level. The first 4 players to sign up may take part, and these players will receive lower priority in the next villain plot until all players have had a turn.
Region: Flotsam

Players will generally have free reign to narrate the event’s occurrences as they wish. For the Execution phase, please refer to the Conflict descriptor to get an idea of the kind of narrative difficulties you will encounter and feel free to make use of them as much or as little as you like to make the thread interesting.

Characters are free to use single large threads or multiple smaller threads to meet the character threshold at the player’s discretion.

If you wish to deploy a Gambit during your mission, in the subject line of the reply you’re using the Gambit in type GAMBIT: [NAME OF GAMBIT]. Using Gambits isn’t required for the success of a thread, but doing so will be taken into account when we factor out the successes and failures of the mission.

Due to the coordinated nature of the attack, characters may only participate in logs in a single select region for this mission as they are occurring simultaneously.

Ilphyl's natural eyesight is great for low and no light. They wince a bit about the rockets and flames -- those could be seen a long way off, but the tunnels should block a direct line of sight. "I hear someone approaching, but I can't see them yet to know which tunnel they're coming from."

"One more," he says, rushing to the final tunnel to set another explosive at the entrance. Once it's set he cuts his rockets and runs back towards where Ilphyl is keeping watch.

As he returns he makes an alarmed sound behind Ilphyl and there's a smell almost like grilling meat. There's a dim light coming from his direction still, but it goes out as he stomps. He gives a relieved sigh as they're plunged into darkness and his eyes switch modes to look for heat signatures.

"Sorry," he says softly. If Ilphyl looks at him there's embarrassment plastered all over his face. "I forgot I wasn't wearing my clothes from home. Burned my shoes." Oops. The remains of the worn out shoes he had been given hang haphazardly to his ankles but the soles are no more.

"Whoops," Ilphyl gave a bit of a laugh. "Well, barefoot should be fine if you have feet that tough." They have to take what levity they can manage in this sort of situation.

"Yeah. I'll be okay," he says, stifling an uneasy laugh to keep quiet. "We can start detonating these tunnels now or later when we're further away. The sound might draw the attention of the troops which might not be great for us if we're found, but it could help the workers who are still evacuating. What do you think we should do?"

Having just met Ilphyl, he's not sure what their preferred approach is to a potential fight or the full range of their abilities. Best to present the options while they have a little time to talk.

"I feel pretty good about my ability to run or hide in the tunnels," Ilphyl said. "Better than the workers. So, detonate sooner rather than later."

Atom raises the detonation device in his hand, ready to tell Ilphyl to brace themselves for the first explosion but their words spark other questions and considerations.

"You have magic, right? Is that what makes it easy to run or hide?"

They don't have much time for explanations, but maybe they have more options than he knew about.

"Anything that could be used to lure the Imperials in a certain direction?"

"I can turn into something small that lives underground," Ilphyl said. "I don't know if that would be a lure. I can make lights, but not at long range."

Atom's eyes narrow in deep thought for a moment. "Could you create lights in one of the tunnels while disguised as a native animal? You could try to draw the soldiers into one of the caves with the light and noise. Once they're deep in enough, you could cut your lights and run out. Then when you're out I can make the entrance collapse." He holds the detonator device aloft.

"But it would be a big risk on your part getting that close to them. What do you think?"

"I'd have to do the spell, then the wildshape," Ilphyl said. "I need my hands and voice to cast the spell. But I can hold it in animal form. And I'm willing to take the risk."

He gives Ilphyl a solemn nod. "I'll set off just a portion of the explosives now then in hopes of luring the soldiers towards this area. Cover your ears and close your eyes."

He gives a countdown to make sure Ilphyl has plenty of time to shield themself from the impending sound and bright light, and he watches the ceiling over both their heads just in case something were to come loose. When he triggers the explosions, there's a great wind in the tunnel that follows the boom. Atom pokes his head out the end of the tunnel to look at the results of the explosions. Thankfully, it appeared the entrances collapsed as hoped, making their plan likely to work if they both timed things correctly.

"Let's hope we hear the troops come this way."

Ilphyl nodded, not trusting their voice until the ringing in their ears subsided. "Listen and wait," they add.

They wait in the dark for some time, only hearing distant fighting and loose rocks falling. But then the sound of footsteps and voices start to become clearer and more distinct. Atom remains crouched behind some rocks by Ilphyl, dead silent, his breath replication turned off.

"They must be trying to sneak around the battlefront! Hurry!" Someone is commanding the group of searching troopers to hurry. Boots pound on rock and echo down the tunnel.

Ilphyl does notice that their companion does not actually need to breathe -- elf hearing is sensitive. As soon as they hear the troops come down the tunnel, they tap Atom's arm as a warning -- no one likes a sudden light, and they cast their spell with a few words and gestures. The lights look enough like lantern light they could be mistaken for a small group with lanterns from a distance.

As soon as the spell is set, they are already starting their wild shape, shifting into a large black-and-white rat while holding the spell.

Atom gives Ilphyl a nod at the tap and watches the lights that they summon with interest. As the sound of the troopers grows, he slips away to stay clear of the likely path of the soldiers and the lights that will hopefully lure them. He finds another rock formation to duck down behind, peeking out occasionally to see how things are proceeding.

As hoped, multiple soldiers come marching down the passage towards Ilyphl, and the ones in front of the line announce that they see light up ahead. The leader of their group tells their group to move in with their weapons ready, prepared to ambush whatever mine workers or Corsairs thought they could hide in back of a tunnel. The group speeds up and rushes towards the light.

As they approach, Ilphyl is moving back towards the entrance, not bothering to act that much like a rat -- a rat fleeing from loud humanoids is believable enough. They stay within the spell's range until they are certain that the soldiers are well within the range of 'being trapped by the rockfall', before running back towards the entrance, letting the spell drop rather than willing the lanterns to follow them.

Atom should see the light dim, even if it is only from the tunnel going dark, and get the signal. Ilphyl is hoping he focuses on getting the detonation and lets Ilphyl worry about getting clear. (If all else fails, enough force to kill a rat will just cause Ilphyl to revert to their natural form, with only the excess carrying over -- as long as they clear the rockfall, being hit by flying debris would suck, but not be lethal.)

upupatomway: (Stronger than all the rest)
From: [personal profile] upupatomway
The soldiers are too focused on the lights ahead that if they noticed the "rat" nobody says anything or glances in its direction. So far so good. Atom watches carefully for the soldiers in the back of the group to step into the tunnel. Thankfully the entire group does as they were commanded and rush in for an attack instead of splitting up.

The lights go out and the soldiers exclaim in confusion. Those in front of the group are even more confused that nobody had come into view. If they had a little while longer, they likely would have realized it was a trap, but the dark provides the needed chaos to keep them standing still where they are while the "rat" runs back towards the entrance. Atom's sight is closed in on the tunnel's entrance for signs of Ilphyl's small movement and heat signature. The instant he starts to pick up on something, he presses the detonation button.

Again, there's a boom and a strong wind from the explosion with loud crumbling rocks on its heels. Atom darts out from behind the rock formation to look closer for signs of Ilphyl exiting, biting his lip in worry that this quickly improvised plan was not as accurately calculated as he hoped.

Ilphyl did cut it a bit close, but it mostly meant they ended up returning to elf form suddenly, and with a few bruises from the transition. They are picking themself up and checking themselves over, and give a silent wave -- they are okay.

Atom sighs in relief when Ilphyl stands and waves. They do look a little roughed up so he double checks, "You okay?" he whispers. He offers them a hand in case they need any support or just help stepping around on the uneven rock and dirt from the passage collapse.

"If you have any trouble suddenly, just let me know." Atom insists just in case.

He frowns at the pile of rock next to them. "We should mark this tunnel so it looks different from the others. Otherwise it'll be hard to find the trapped soldiers later. Even if the Imperials recover them, I'd rather they get released."

"Fabric works," Atom agrees. Without really thinking, he rips the lower part of the sleeves of his shirt. It wasn't exactly a great fit for him anyway. He makes quite a sight with his shoes singed off. He drapes the fabric as high up as he can, giving the ends a shove in between some rocks and dirt, and tries to make something of an X to mark the spot.

"I guess learning the local writing system would be a good idea for the future."

"Really? I'll have to check it out. I'm staying at the Vault. What about you?"

He steps back, satisfied with the mark they've secured on the rock pile. There's a great rumble throughout the caves, echoes from battle elsewhere in the mines.

"Right! We better go help the others."

[OOC: I'm good.]

"Flotsam. I'm better outdoors than I am as a researcher," they said. "Even if I did grow up underground."

Which means they are not bad at telling where the sounds are coming from, despite echoing. "This way."
