EVENT #02: A MAN OF WORTH PLANNING PHASE

The time has come to begin preparing to engage and capture the VIP. The knowledge he holds will be imperative to further Corsair operations, and they absolutely cannot let this opportunity slip by.

By a narrow vote, the Corsairs have elected to destroy the escort fleet, deeming a capture operation on the ships far too risky while also attempting to secure a VIP. As such, the Corsairs have two primary duties - discern information on the movement of the troops and prepare heavy munitions to sink the airships.

Since the game’s population is still in flux due to our new status, we are scaling back the people requirements and opening all event logs to everyone. Now, in order for a given log to be complete, we only require that players start logging it out. We’ll continue to assess and refine our mission style as the game continues and we see what works and what doesn’t, please bear with us as we get this all figured out.

CORE MISSIONS

Gather Information: Negotiators will need to connect with the Imperials in Elysium and wring as many details about the upcoming visit as they can. The more the Corsairs know about the timetable, expected escort, and armaments, the higher the chance of success.
Conflicts: A delicate touch will be needed to avoid arousing suspicions. Corsairs will need to be able to justify why it is important for them to have the knowledge, and Imperials tend not to like to give information to staff if they acknowledge they exist at all.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, your thread header should read GATHER INFORMATION.

Gather Munitions:Suppliers will need to start preparing and developing heavy munitions to attack the escort fleet. It is imperative that every airship in the escort sinks beneath the waves, and the crew along with it, and the Corsairs will require a lot of firepower to see it done.
Conflicts: Working with explosives is risky business, and unskilled hands are liable to get blown off. Suppliers will need to be careful with both their preparation and their handling, even moreso if they go out to gather particularly volatile materials from particularly volatile wildlife.
Requirements: To participate in this mission, your thread header should read GATHER MUNITIONS.

SIDE MISSIONS

With Hesaeth captured, the Corsairs will now need to hold it. Players may propose Player Plots to see to its defenses, in the likely event that the Empire attempts to reclaim it in the near future. The below prompts are potential things that may be done, but players are encouraged to think up their own plans and run their own logs if they think of anything. These Plots may be submitted here.
Trap the Mines: Line the mines with explosives so they can be collapsed in the event of an attack.
Undersea Route: Carve an undersea route into the mines so people can be evacuated via submersible.
Rallying Point: Set up a Rallying Point in the Hesaeth wilderness where evacuees can rendezvous for escape in the event of attack.
Defense Systems: Set up cannons to fight back against Imperial Invaders.

Underwater, there aren't any Imperials or Corsairs. Donnie's glad there's still somewhere that none will go, and although the Corsairs still make more use of the sea than the Empire does, it isn't extensively so. It's tempting to want to stay beneath the waves, too easy to just let go of all the problems waiting above.

But that's not his goal here, and he knows he's too deep into things to turn shell now.

There aren't too many openings that would comfortably fit a submersible, another problem, but still one that can be addressed. Donnie swims easily through the opening he's found, a craggy underwater cavern. Hopefully nothing's living in here. He switches on his torch and likewise, the beacon, hoping Angelika's got the other end in position.

While Donnie isn't terribly versed in magic, he has a better grasp of what the device is supposed to do, supplemented by that power source. It should give clear indication of the other's location, and then it'll be a matter of securing it. He checks the watch built into his ENC- still making good time.

There's a limit to how many ENC connections you can make-especially when the infrastructure to use them in this area is so non-existent because if the empire captures one...it would be potentially disastrous. So for now, they're out of contact-at least until the beacon is lit-and that is only a directional source.

A source that lights up the machine in Angelika's lap as soon as Donnie brings his end of the pair of beacons online. She can be guided towards him now-at least, as soon as she finishes damping out the last of these errant signals! The few tiny ether crystals left in the rock ping back almost as strongly as Donnie's signal, and she needs to tune and refine her reception a bit more...

But now, she's locked on. All Donnie has to do is find an cave big enough to convert into a submarine dock-ideally one with an existing air-pocket they can drill into-and they'll be ready to drill to him. She lays the device down and sights along it-straight as an arrow, straight as the crow flies-and then gestures to the support crew. "Standby sandpipes and pumps, and make ready to give me water on my signal."

One last signal-she can't communicate long or complex messages to Donnie, but she can pulse a signal to him. Two pulses, for 'ready to begin' make his own machine make a slightly dissonant pinging with each one that arrives.

Ah, there it is. Donnie smiles to himself. The beacons are reading each other, which would have been a big problem if they hadn't. Mostly it'd mean more time wasted if he had to go swim back up.

He sweeps his light along the rocky walls, swimming along as he inspects the formations. The less work they had to put into clearing things out, the better, and this end seems like it's only getting narrower. So he backtracks a ways, swimming until he finds another passageway, much more promising than the first.

This branch doesn't look like it's narrowing, and from what he can tell, it wouldn't be too difficult to widen some of the areas with some carefully set charges. He looks back at the beacon at that signal, nodding to himself. Good, they're in position. He kicks his legs, propelling him forth.

The space before him opens up, and he can't help for a pleased smirk. Oh, this is perfect. He swims up and up, head breaking water with a gasp. It's not the largest air pocket, but it's still an ideal spot. Now to get things set up.

The signal's still resonating clearly, aligned as closely as one can hope for. Donnie finishes up and taps back that same ready-signal to Angelika.

Once she got the signal, Angelika triggered her own three times, and then adjusted hers sights once more. A bit steeper than she might have liked, but within tolerances. They might need to cut steps or install handrails but that could be done later. For now, the shaft had to be cut and she took her baton in hand, concentrating as she began to summon magic...and her hair began to drift up into the air.

"Is she supposed to be glowing like that-" said someone a moment before Angelika gestured sharply at the water pumps with her baton and then swung it forward. Three jets of water shot past her, and began to splash back against her, her raingear proving adequate to keep the worst off, as she concentrated her power on accelerating the water forward-and then began to create a spinning disc of it. That, laden with sand, would do the bulk of the cutting-and as it cut forward, it would dump sand out to the sides, where the crews following her with the sand-pipes would suck it up using compressed air from the ventilation station.

Overall, it was a fast cutting method-almost walking pace, but there were problems. That much spinning water would produce steam from friction alone, so the shaft would be very warm after a while-and it would be slippery to.

With the signal that Angelika's about to begin, Donnie moves away, looking up at the cavern ceiling. He's not sure how long it would take for any progress to be made, but he monitors things, hoping he won't have to signal a stop due to sudden compromise in the rock.

He tilts his head. Was that a distant rumble, or just his imagination? Probably the latter, but he listens all the same. He's not sure how deep the rock is between here and where Angelika is, but she'd said she had an idea on how to handle things, and Donnie trusts her enough to know her own ability.

It was a fair distance, and it was probably that Donnie wasn't going to hear Angelika coming for some time-unless some cave in between them served as an echo chamber to intensify the sounds of her approach. She was moving somewhat slower than a walking pace across more than half a mile of rock. It was slow progress-unless you compared it to any other way you could drill through rock, even somewhat weak and fractured sandstone.

What was impressive about it was consistancy-how the cute blond girl turned her magic into an ongoing torrent and held it perfectly at that level for minutes on end. While sweat might begin to appear on her brow, it was from heat, not exertion.

With no change likely to come for a while, Donnie decides to get a better look at the opening to the cavern. He takes one more look at the ceiling before he dives back down, eyeballing the space below and making a rough measurement of it from one to the other before he heads back towards the passage that leads out towards open water.

There's a good span of rock that would definitely need to be taken care of for a submersible to comfortably pass though, so he marks off the trouble areas with chalk.

Oh sure, yeah. There's a bunch of stalactites too, that cling to the ceiling and probably formed when this cave was dry and the rain fell upon the rock above, trickling down and depositing minerals in what was then an airy cave on the underside of a flying island. Those could scrape or drag against the sides of a sub-and are fragile enough to be broken off by a single turtle.

Angelika meanwhile, has to stop for a bit so that the sand-tubes and water pumps can be moved up to support her. She feels...surprised that she's outrun them, even at what felt like a moderate pace-but the pipes need to be lengthened and sealed, there's no doubt of that.

Better to err on the side of more space than less, so Donnie does some calculations as he looks at things. He doesn't really have anything on him for some major landscaping, but a bit of trimming is something he can definitely handle.

In testing he breaks off a tip of a stalactite, studying it before he follows it up to where it's anchored. A couple good blows could probably do it... Well, it's a good thing he can manage magical tools. He shapes a glowing pick-axe, bringing its point to where he'd marked a line before digging into it with a bit more force so he can try prying enough of a crack for it to fall apart. Then on to the next..!

The rock here was stable against gravity, but it had never known any kind of stress like this-a few blows sent it to the bottom, and let him move onto the next.

On the far side of the rock meanwhile, Angelika has pauses for some jam and bread, to perk her energy back up! She listens to the technicians talk about the sand-pipe, apparently it's been a bit too fast at sucking up sand and is erroding the joints. She worries about that a bit but...she's the drill, not the other parts of the system. And as soon as the tubes are extended, she's back at the drill, cutting away at the rock, though now using smaller, tighter water jets to try and break off whole boulders all at once.

There's something immensely satisfying about breaking stalactites. But that extra bit of effort does prompt him to swim back towards the air pocket for another breath of air. He eyes the cavern ceiling again while he's there, but it's difficult to estimate how much work has been done when he's not even sure of the pacing.

So back down again he goes, to finish up what he can of clearing the underwater passageway.
