i. Vault Library: Over 100 years old and still not too old for picture books
Usually, Link is quite comfortable in libraries. Even if he’s not particularly academic himself, he’s spent more than enough time in them with Zelda. And he does always like a good novel. (Especially Romance. And Mystery. And most especially any book that was both at the same time.)
And yet, in the library he’s…less comfortable. Namely because he can’t actually read any of the books here. But his inability to read Imperial is exactly the problem he’s here to fix.
So now Link is curled up in a big comfy chair, frowning faintly at the picture book held in his hands. On the cover is a cute cartoon flying ship, and the title, A is for Airship.
ii. Vault Academy: Behold the unholy desk-shield
Link had ended up in the Academy’s basic ether training classes the same way he usually found himself in this sort of thing: by wandering around the place, opening doors to see what was behind them, and then shamelessly sticking around when he found himself in the middle of a lecture.
He hadn’t really expected anything to come from the basic Ether training class he found himself gatecrashing. Magic had never really been Link’s forte, after all. Any magical ability he’d possessed had usually come from someone else.
And yet…at the end of the lesson, something clicked. Something familiar, that he’d thought had been gone forever. Almost without thinking, he pulls his shield from his back. Puts it on his right hand, while reaching out with his right towards one of the classroom desks.
His right arm flickers, and it’s like there’s a ghostly shadow of another arm laid over his own. One with clawed nails and odd geometric bands encircling it, and that glows a bright green.
Then Link pulls...and suddenly, the table has shrunk - and attached to Link’s shield.
“Ha!” He cries.
iii. Flotsam deck: Advanced fish murder
Now that Link's mysteriously managed to regain the Fuse ability - and also his stash of shock fruit - there's only one thing to do.
Immediately start using it to really rake in the fish.
He starts on the deck of one of the fishing boats. Looks down into the water. And then when he spots a passing school of fish...draws his bow, pulls a shock fruit out of his back, and then attaches the fruit to the end of his arrow in a flash of green light.
When he lets the arrow loose, the water crackles with electrical energy! ...And a whole bunch of very dead fish start floating to the surface.
Time to jump in and start collecting!
iv. Flotsam kitchen: Pizza party [locked to Donnie]
Link wasn’t picky about foods: he liked all of them, practically in equal measure. But sometimes, he was in the mood for something specific.
Right now, that something was pizza.
Having given most of his Tabantha wheat to Shu, and not having much Hateno cheese in his pack, Link had substituted both for local ingredients. But the star of the show - the Hylian tomatoes - were straight from home.
And now is the moment of truth, when Link opened the oven and revealed his creation. Fresh and steaming hot, he pulls out a delicious Hylian tomato pizza.

Date: 2024-09-08 02:32 pm (UTC)Why did it have to be on the top shelf? He asked himself, as he glances over to the ladder. Maybe today's the day...? He wondered as he approaches, putting his hand on the rung. Butterflies rioted in his belly as he starts putting his foot on, before suddenly pulling away.
Nope. Not Today.

Date: 2024-09-10 04:32 am (UTC)Was Thomas not able to climb the latter?
Putting down the book, Link comes over to stand next to Thomas, head tilted to one side. "...Need help?" he says.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-11 12:30 am (UTC)"Uhm..." He hesitates. "Yes. I'm trying to get a book, but."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-12 12:09 am (UTC)It doesn't seem at all high to him. It wasn't even a storey high.
But he shrugs, and then climbs up the ladder. Then looks back down at Thomas inquisitively. Which book was he after?
iv
Date: 2024-09-09 01:30 am (UTC)The scent of something delicious grabs his attention, luring him into the kitchen Link so happens to be baking. To be fair, when he's starving anything might smell delicious, but there's something beautiful about how that freshly prepared pie looks when Link is pulling it out of the oven.
Donnie pokes his head through the window, practically drooling.
"What is that."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-10 04:33 am (UTC)Then, he looks at Donnie, head titled to one side. Picks up a slice, and holds it out towards him. Does Donnie want to try?
no subject
Date: 2024-09-10 05:04 am (UTC)And then Link holds out a piece. The turtlekin leans further into the window, sniffing at it like some feral thing before he remembers he has hands to take the thing for himself. It's warm, but not uncomfortably so, and the threat of everything starting to slowly drip off of the....what is it? Bread? -has Donnie quickly move to stick it in his mouth.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-11 11:19 pm (UTC)Delicious Hylian tomatoes. A warm, perfectly crusted bread. And of course, cheese. Lots and lots of cheese. It's the cheese that makes it, really.
But while Donnie enjoys his first bite, Link doesn't hesitate - he grabs a slice for himself too.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)"Oh where have you been all my life," he says around his last mouthful, looking sadly at his empty hands.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-12 01:16 am (UTC)At this point, rather than holding out another slice, Link just picks up the whole pizza and holds it out for Donnie to grab from. "You want the recipe?" he says.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-12 01:43 am (UTC)"Mm? Sure? I...'ve never cooked before, is it difficult?" Sorry, he is not waiting for an answer while he stuffs his face. Famished? Maybe just slightly. But also this is so gooooood. And vaguely familiar somehow.
"Wait, I think Shu mentioned something like this before. It was some sort of food specialty from some place in her world."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-13 01:49 am (UTC)"Shu makes [pizzas] too?" Link says, faintly surprised. "They're new, back home."
Since you know, people only just recently figured out how to make cheese again. The culinary history of Hyrule was a bit strange, sometimes.

Date: 2024-09-13 10:09 pm (UTC)Can't let Donnie eat all of it.
As for whether Link heard what Donnie said through the chewing...well it's hard to say. Link doesn't respond at all, so maybe he didn't.

Advanced Fish Murder
Date: 2024-09-12 07:55 am (UTC)Making his way over to check it out and finding Link, he stands there, mouth agape for a second at the multitudes of dead floating fish.
"Seriously?!"
Re: Advanced Fish Murder
Date: 2024-09-13 01:50 am (UTC)It's a perfectly normal way to fish. To Link, anyway.
And then jumps into the water. He's got to pick them all up! At a leisurely pace, he's starts swimming around and collecting the fish.

Date: 2024-09-15 03:56 am (UTC)Noctis watches the other man go to it, sighing dejectedly and sitting down cross-legged on the dock.

Date: 2024-09-15 09:02 am (UTC)How was electrocuting an entire school of fish not an experience? As far as Link was concerned, it was a great time.
And he got lots of fish. Win-win, really. Unless...maybe Noctis is upset that Link already got them all?
"...Did you want some?" He asks.

Date: 2024-09-13 01:02 am (UTC)The girl who's speaking is even applauding politely-
2/2
Date: 2024-09-13 01:04 am (UTC)Oh right, she's also the teacher's assistant. And she doesn't look like she'll be very impressed if Link can't do as she asks.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-13 01:51 am (UTC)Oh well. Nothing for it, then. Link draws his sword...and then moves to try and literally cut the table off with a large, heavy swing.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-13 03:26 am (UTC)So there's absolutely nothing stopping whatever happens next. Will the table be pried free, or cut in half, or will a full sized chunk fall to the floor as the bit left on the shield is still shrunk down? Or will the sword rebound off?
no subject
Date: 2024-09-13 11:06 pm (UTC)The sword does not rebound off. Or pry the table free. It acts as one might expect a sharp bladed weapon to behave when being brought to bear upon a wooden object at great speed: it carves a big slice into the table.
Who says you can't wield a sword like it's an axe?
It's not quite enough to dislodge the table, however. So Link briefly inspects the results, and then moves to give it another go.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-14 12:52 am (UTC)And let's not be chopping tables in half, even if you can in fact chop wood with one. Instead, Angelika steps forward and touches the phantasmal 'glue' that holds the shield and the desk together.
"Can you tell me how you did this? Maybe I can help you undo it."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-15 12:25 am (UTC)How did he do this?
...Does Link even know how to answer that?
"...Rauru's spirit gave me his arm," he says slowly. "Gave me the [fuse] ability. But it was gone after I got my arm back."
Not exactly the most illuminating answer, really.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-16 02:53 am (UTC)"The [Fuse] ability? And that lets you glue two objects together like this?" It was after all the important bit, and she poked at it again.
And then she reached into her satchel and began to rummage around. "I guess this is as good a time as any for an introduction to counter-spells. Even if it's going to take some time to resolve this one."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-16 04:41 am (UTC)Suddenly, in one fluid movement, Link pulls the bow from his back, draws an arrow - and then pulls an apple out of his pack. A flash of green energy, and that spectral echo of a clawed arm in place of Link's own - and then Link lets the arrow fly.
It's just an apple, so rather than any real damage it just bounces off the wall - although there is a bit of a dent in there now. But it serves as less...destructive demonstration of the ability.
"...Couldn't unfuse things though," he admits. "Had to ask a blacksmith."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-16 07:00 pm (UTC)She's cut off by his drawing the arrow, and nearly drops her satchel in shock, her hand coming out wielding a weapon that looks a bit like a sword-hilt and crossguard of feathered wings, but thicker and with more decoration. And as his arrow bounces off the wall, it rebounds and hits a shield she quickly conjures in it's path, a bright pink-and-blue spell circle that kills all its forward momentum. Letting it drop instead, straight down to the floor.
"Well, I'm not a blacksmith, not really. But I am a bit of a dabbler in many fields. Let me have a poke around, and maybe I can get this undone.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-17 02:00 am (UTC)So the rather extensive response - at least as Link sees it - gets a bit of a bemused blink from him. But he doesn't comment, just looks at her conjured shields with faint curiosity.
And then holds out the table-shield towards her - a clear invitation for her to take a closer look, and see what she can do. When she looks at it closer, she may be able to tell that it hasn't just stuck the items together - there's no glue, no force holding two items. Rather, they've been fused together on a more fundamental level - in some way transformed in order to become one object.
no subject
Date: 2024-09-17 03:03 am (UTC)Picking at the table shield is enlightening-and deeply confusing. "You somehow really did fuse them together. Could a normal tools even cut this apart?" She turns it over, looking at it from several angles as her brow furrows in concentration-and a faint green glow in her eyes glows brighter.
"Maybe Maliach's Unweaving, or the Elrich Ethereal Engine would have an effect..."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-17 05:11 am (UTC)He also has absolutely no idea what 'Maliach's Unweaving' or 'the Elrich Ethereal Engine' is. But Angelika certainly seems like she knows what she's doing. He's content to just wait patiently, as a silent observer, as she works through the puzzle.
(Zelda would like Angelika, he thinks. If she were here, watching this, she'd have so many questions she'd want to ask...)
no subject
Date: 2024-09-17 06:49 pm (UTC)In the end, she just sits there, meditating on it for 15 minutes before she finally comes to a testable hypothesis. She moves the shield to her lap, places one hand on it-and one on her baton, as she begins to cast the unraveling, a slow, laborious spell that will take time to come to grips with and unravel what Link has fused together.
(Does experience with Zelda alert Link to what her green-eyed counterpart has forgotten here?)
no subject
Date: 2024-09-17 11:37 pm (UTC)Not to mention, Link's own use of his abilities had always been more of an instinctive thing. Something felt, something intuited, rather than something rationally understood. So Link just watches, and fails to notice anything that Angelika might have missed.
He does get a little bored after fifteen minutes, however. So he digs around in his pack, looking for something to fuse to his sword. Give it a little extra oomph. The materials he'd regained along with the pack were largely perishables, with most of the monster parts being gone. But he did have his stash of lizalfos talons, so he grabbed one and Fused it to the sword.
Now, the blade of the sword itself had transformed - into a wicked blade that was very much like the lizalfos talons.
1/2
Date: 2024-09-18 12:19 am (UTC)"Oh, I think I've got it! Watch this, I've reached a critical point-the fusion should unravel in just a few seconds!"
She's almost shining with pride as she focuses her attention on the shield, a bright, wide smile on her face as the experiment begins to come together. She beams in triumph as the shield begins to rock back and forth-
2/2
Date: 2024-09-18 12:23 am (UTC)"I forgot...about...how heavy these are."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-18 01:34 am (UTC)Instead he darts forward, immediately picking up the table and getting it off her. With it now safely set aside, he leans forward and peers at her with deeply furrowed brows and a look of concern. Is she okay?!
no subject
Date: 2024-09-18 02:04 am (UTC)Quick, say something Angelika. "You're pretty strong."
Stupid! Say something else!
"Class is over, right? I'd better get ready for the next one."
no subject
Date: 2024-09-18 02:50 am (UTC)Right now though, he just looks at her. Blinks, and nods. Yes, he is strong. This is a demonstrable fact. And also something that tends to come along with that collection of titles that he has, actually.
Since she's talking about that though, and about the next class starting...well she must be okay then. So Link feels comfortable standing up, and getting ready to go. "Okay," he says, as he sheaths his sword - the one which now bears a rather unusual looking blade, thanks to his newfound ability. "Thank you," he adds.
no subject
Date: 2024-10-01 02:14 am (UTC)She does catch an eyefull of his sword and say "Wait how are you gonna fit that into the same scabbard-" before he sheathes it anyways. Huh, maybe there's more to that spell than she thought. "Oh, um, sure. Let me know if you ever need to have something split apart again. I might be able to do it faster."
no subject
Date: 2024-10-01 10:07 am (UTC)Good to know that Angelika could help un-fuse things in the future, though. He might need that, if he ever ended up fusing something that later turned out to maybe not have been a great idea.
So he gives her a nod, and says "Okay," to show he understands. And then, because it's apparently time to go, he adds; "Bye."
And then runs out of the classroom.
