EVENT #05: FIREWORKS FOR NEW YEAR PREPARATION

With winter’s chill already setting in, Corsair laboratories are hard at work pumping out explosives for the operation to come. After extensive training, the crews of the Corsair airship brigade bring the infiltrators quietly to the Isles Above, all cabin lights doused to move stealthily to the drop point. There, Corsair specialists will disembark and plant explosives, as well as, perhaps, make contact with local workers and evacuate them if time permits. With all crews operating with quiet efficiency, the time is almost nigh to strike at the heart of the Empire itself.

Any mission marked Critical must have at least one log in progress by the end of the month to be counted as complete. Missing Critical missions will have major negative impacts on the Execution mission in the following month. Supplemental missions can be completed or not, completing them will go toward achieving optimal results during the Execution mission next month. As with Critical missions, Supplemental missions must have at least one log in progress by the end of the month to be counted as complete.

SUPPLIER MISSIONS

Create Explosives: Characters will need to create explosives and munitions for deployment.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: In order to get explosives that will make enough of a dent in the Imperial forces, Corsairs will need to develop them from the live rounds dropped above the vault. Logs can involve recovering salvage as well as construction of explosives.

Develop Precision Explosives: Characters will need to develop precision explosives to avoid undue damage to the civilians of Bluvink during the attack.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: This will require some research and development from suppliers to find explosives that will detonate at very specific levels in order to not cause the volatile materials within the Bluvink factory to ignite and cause wide-scale damage to the town.

Develop Communications Hijack: Characters will need to develop a tool that can hijack communications within the Empire.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: This will require recovering some Imperial communication technology from salvage or from the Vault and finding a way to dominate Imperial airwaves so they can’t shut down the Corsair propaganda.

INFILTRATOR MISSIONS

Set Explosives in Bluvink: Characters will need to sneak into the Bluvink factory and set explosives, preparing for them to explode during the New Year attack.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: The factory has regular guard rotations that can be figured out with proper observation, they will need to be avoided. The facility will also need to be properly cased so that the explosives can be set in places they will not be detected.

Set Explosives in the Vindess Mines: Characters will need to sneak into the Vindess Mines and set explosives, preparing for them to explode during the New Year attack.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: The mines have regular guard rotations and are constantly manned by serfs and servants. All will need to be avoided in order to set the explosives, and those manning the mines must be avoided at all costs.

NEGOTIATOR MISSIONS

Miner Negotiation: Characters will need to convince the miners to evacuate and to join with the Corsairs, as well as not tip off the Imperials.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: Many miners are distrustful of the Corsairs due to Imperial Propoganda, and several are Imperial loyalists even under the current circumstances. Several miners may need to be subdued in order to safely evacuate the area without their captors being alerted.

VILLAINS

Villain plots will be planned this month and will happen in the following month. Potential villains may post here to start workshopping potential plots that they may take part in next month.

So... Both these places have explosives in them already? With detonators? ... but on-site procurement and placement would be risky, especially because they would be missed... Hasty Plan C, at best.

Thank you!

... Mm. There's a few things I can think of to fit "volatile processes" given the tech level I'm assuming of the Empire (or equivalents). Industrial processes get spicy, especially if you're working with spicy metals.

Regardless, this is getting to PAFO territory.

Harlock knows the basics of creating explosives, but he also had quite a bit of experience with disarming and dealing with potentially live munitions.

The pirate kneels next to Atom, behind one of the carefully concealed covers that was built by vaulters for past gathering collections. He turns so his good eye faces Atom. "You'll have better odds of timing our trip," he noted in a matter of fact way. "Focus on that, and I can do the carrying,"

It wouldn't be the first time he had to provide the needed carrying capacity for someone much shorter than him.

Senshi will be Setting Explosives in the Mines and also Negotiating with the Miners. It's personal for him... not to mention he used to be one of the miners and knows something of what they've been through.

Senshi never mined at Vindess, but Senshi knows mines. Knows their stifling darkness, how quickly the air can turn acrid, how treacherous the stones around one can be. He knows it because those stones betrayed him and his, once.

It's why he must save who he can now.

He didn't come alone. Not only his teammates from the corsairs are with him, but he's bearing the proverbial canary in a cage, with a setup to revive it, with conjured air in the worst case using an Air Ether crystal - he didn't have a crystal large enough to revive a fully grown person.

He but very carefully places a charge against a wall, and unspools the fuse.

Infiltrator Deedee hears Bluvink is nice this time of year, and perhaps such a hardworking town deserves a branch of her spa and bathhouse?

This can go horribly wrong horribly fast.

This could blow up in Deedee’s face BADLY… but knowing what she does, she’ll want to help Terra.

III: Hijack

In what felt like her first real task since arriving and getting equipped and outfitted, Oki turned her eyes to the Vault's gathered intelligence on the communications of the Empire. It started with a visit to a storage area, where the chimera clomped in, gathered up a large, unused table in her arms and simply hefted it and took it to a corner of the Vault's facilities, found a spot free of anything too large or fragile for her to haul aside. Her next movement was to gather whatever plans, books and notes she could find - modest as the collection was - on the state of the art of signals technology, and the present state of affairs in the Empire. All of this, she stacked, organized and filed for relative ease of access along one side of the table, and she sat there and began to read, and assimilate information. She also began to take notes, using the local language, her hand practiced and her handwriting tight, even blocky.

"Right." Atom gives him a nod and looks ahead at the field of mostly destroyed targets and craters of various sizes. Moonlight shines on twisted shrapnel shapes, but the occasional flare in the sky flashes brighter just before the rumble of an explosion follows.

Another flare flies, this one far away, and Atom waves to Harlock to follow him onward. His eyes light up as he scans the ground ahead for signs of the munitions. It appears the area immediately around the secret passage to the surface had been cleared by previous trips, but the ongoing fire of the Empire had re-dotted the material here and there. The closest one being close by.

Upon reaching the site, Atom kneels to brush some dirt and gravel from off the top of it, making it more obvious.

A. Entry

From afar, the guards outside the factory appear to be walking assigned routes as described by provided intelligence. Atom is confident in his ability to navigate the factory, having the blueprints stored in his data, but avoiding the guards still poses a challenge. Blueprints didn't say things like how fast the guards walked or how noisy the doors were when they were moved.

Atom frowns, thinking over their situation. "...I could... try to observe their routes and average walking speed from afar?" he suggests one possibility.

B. Scanning

After a successful entry, Atom gets busy scanning their surroundings. His eyes light for a moment, a bright green, then go back to normal. He turns to the others and nods to them.

"No guards nearby- I don't see their body heat signatures," he reassures those who are with him, voice a cautious whisper.

How important is it to avoid creating sparks or flames inside the factory? Like, would one have to be right next to the munitions or volatile chemicals or are we saying there are entire big rooms where sparks in the air in general could easily lead to explosions and fire? Are munitions and chemicals stashed away at all for the safety of the factory workers or are they lying around with open container lids, etc.

Link's experience of mining mostly boils down to smashing - or exploding - really big chunks of rock until something interesting falls out. For anything more skilled than that, you'd need one of the Gerudo.

Fortunately, Link doesn't need to have that kind of experience. But what he can do is keep on lookout, watching the corridors while Senshi works. He'd downed a sneaky elixir before they started, dampening every sound he makes - and making it that much harder for anyone to notice him.

He glances down the tunnels, before making a quick gesture towards Senshi - one that says that they're in the clear. No one's arrived to interrupt them - not yet.

"Hmm?"

A young woman with a confident stride looks down at the chimera, her sharp eyes seeming to take in everything at a glance.

"Were you on the communications team?"

Renne had watched the being that appeared to be a young boy with a faint smile. She nodded without complaint at his report.

The chimera's response was to look over, head tilted slightly, fixing the young woman with a pair of off-colored eyes. She offered a small, polite smile.

"Before I was here? In a manner of speaking. Long before the Empire decided I was best for hauling boxes, a significant portion of my work involved listening to things that other people were not supposed to be able to hear, everything from simple surveillance to pilfering data from devices. Having seen the aim of the task at hand, I thought it prudent to educate myself as best I could. Communication can come in an amazing variety of forms, after all, from smoke signals and flags to what amount to portable brains that speak to one another in highly complex code."

She shrugged, still holding a large book which was of all things, on electromagnetism.

"I'm..." She paused a moment, considering. "Oki Korobase."

"A few ideas occur. One is entry from above. That would only work for someone who could fit on gliders with the payload, but would gain us roof access and the run of the maintenance walks. Problems there: I don't know where the thermals are, and if they have searchlights, we'll have to think of a way around those."

"Slipping in with the shift makes us difficult to discover, but makes smuggling in the payload intensely difficult."

"... Or, someone could make a diversion. Load an ether stone into a completed Armor and joyride as long as you can. It's sure to get their attention and obscure our target. Problem is, they'd still zero in on the factory, and you'd need to lead enough forces away to make entry easier.... And if we do it, it'd have to be during the planned comms blackout, which might be a very limited window."

Harlock moves quickly, following after Atom's steps, quick but careful - the pirate wondered if this was how soldiers in 20th century wars had felt crossing no man's land, before brushing it aside, this wasn't the time to get distracted.

Once he saw digging, he moves in closer, taking a careful study of it - glancing over to Atom before even thinking of attempting to unbury it.

“I could get on the roofs from on foot,” Deedee says, more confident about this than the overall mission. “One of the perks of mixing kung fu with magic. The difficulties then become letting the rest of you in without getting caught.”
