CW: Spiders.
Laios might be a resident of Flotsam, but when the festivals of waning summer come around Laios is using his shore leave not for boat races or fishing contests, but to travel to Elysium to participate in the hunt. The monster hunt, which Laios is very starry eyed about. Honestly he's not even thinking about winning; he's just eager to have this opportunity to potentially see some cool monsters! Sea serpents and their like rarely swim up to Flotsam after all.
This particular patch of Elysium forest is disappointingly monster-free so far, however, with only large, sticky spider webs hanging raggedly from the trees overhead to tell someone there used to be a bunch of giant spiders in the area before some earlier hunters picked them off.
Laios picks his way through the webbing, and then spots something interesting under one of the larger trees. Splattered across the grass is a patch of some dark, semi-liquid substance. Laios goes to crouch near it and tentatively sniffs. It has an acrid scent, and squishes when Laios pokes it with his sword.
He looks over to his companion, smiling. "Isn't this neat? Giant spiders means giant frass."
Sea Squall [Flotsam]
It's a particularly hot, lazy day when Laios is back working on The Brave Boar, for a given value of working; the ship is tidy enough that Laios was left taskless, so he'd escaped to the deck with scrap paper and charcoal to try drawing some of the monsters he'd seen during the hunt.
He'd been so absorbed in it that he hadn't really registered the change in the lighting, nor looked up to see how the clouds in the sky were building. But the rest of the crew had, and recognized the signs of an incoming storm. And all too soon Laios was looking up, bewildered, as the deck suddenly was crawling with people.
There's a lot to do to keep a ship safe when a storm's on the way, and every sailor has a part to play. In Laios's case, he's being tasked with helping with the rigging-
"Whuff!"
-or at least, so he assumes from the rope a boatswain tosses him before he can so much as blink. A moment later that boatswain tosses another rope to a person nearby, and barks some orders at the both of them before stalking off to the next set of seamen.
Laios takes a moment to process, then turns to his companion. "Come on, then," he says. "I think we'd better get this done quick."
(Though he says this, he does crouch to quickly stuff his drawings and charcoal into his coat.)

Hunting horrors
Date: 2024-08-13 11:19 pm (UTC)Link nods - it is neat, although maybe not as interesting to Link as it is to Laios. He'd much rather find the spider - and maybe see if he can harvest a few parts from it.
He looks around, keeping an eye on those webs in particular. Most of the spiders might be gone, but there could always be a straggler...

He knows urine is useful as a source of ammonia, maybe there's chemicals in the digestive enzymes of giant spiders that would be of some interest. "Do you have a bottle or something we could use? Something acid resistant?"

Date: 2024-08-19 03:53 am (UTC)It's not the sort of thing you'd expect someone to carry in such a bag, actually. For a pack of that size, most people would prioritise many, many other things instead. But Link pulls one out without hesitation, and holds it out towards Laios.

Date: 2024-08-23 11:36 pm (UTC)Being the keen observer of people and their packing habits that he isn't, Laios doesn't think to question Link's priorities at all. As far as he's concerned he wanted a bottle and now Link's giving him one, yay.
Scooping some frass into the bottle is a slightly awkward, messy endeavor, but he quickly has a sample of brown goop in a tube ready for whatever mad scientist might take an interest in it. Since Link's the one with the bag, Laios blithely hands it over to Link.
"Alright, let's keep moving. I don't think we'll get to see any live spiders-" and Laios is certainly disappointed by the thought "-but keep an eye out for any adults or egg sacs."

Date: 2024-08-24 05:11 am (UTC)This isn't an area Link is at all familiar with. But he looks comfortable out here all the same, moving through the wilderness.
He also quickly shows that he has a tendency to pick up things. Mushrooms. Flowers. Herbs. They all get picked up and put away in his pack - although Link is at least highly efficiently about it. He doesn't stop or slow down for it; just casually picks up anything of interest as they happen to walk by.

"Psst."
While olding his arm and hand close to himself Laios gestures at Link to look, then points up into the branches of a nearby tree. There's a giant spider curled up on top of a large, white mass sticking to the bark. Although it has six black eyes of various sizes, it doesn't seem to be reacting to their presence yet.
"Be careful about moving," Laios says quietly. "They can't see still objects very well."

Slowly - very slowly - Link crouches down, letting the tall grass hide him. Then reaches to take the bow from his back and notch an arrow.

Date: 2024-08-23 11:28 pm (UTC)"Well right now we've got to prep the ship for an incoming storm, like the captain says," Laios explains. "That means we've got to go over the rigging and look for any damage to the ropes, and since the captain wants to lie ahull we'll be lowering and securing the sails. Are you any good with knots? I can show you how to tie the ones we'll use."

Date: 2024-08-28 09:31 pm (UTC)While Laios isn't exactly high-ranking in the Crimson Corsairs he does take his position of comparative-senior fairly seriously, and shows Ilphyl where to climb up, pointing out the various parts of the rigging along the masts and explaining what they're called ("Those are the running backstays.") and their functions ("The topping lift is there to hold up the boom.")
Some of which may have already been explained to Ilphyl by now by other residents of Flotsam, but at least Laios is trying?
