Hunting Horrors [Elysium]
CW: Spiders.
Laios might be a resident of Flotsam, but when the festivals of waning summer come around Laios is using his shore leave not for boat races or fishing contests, but to travel to Elysium to participate in the hunt. The monster hunt, which Laios is very starry eyed about. Honestly he's not even thinking about winning; he's just eager to have this opportunity to potentially see some cool monsters! Sea serpents and their like rarely swim up to Flotsam after all.

This particular patch of Elysium forest is disappointingly monster-free so far, however, with only large, sticky spider webs hanging raggedly from the trees overhead to tell someone there used to be a bunch of giant spiders in the area before some earlier hunters picked them off.

Laios picks his way through the webbing, and then spots something interesting under one of the larger trees. Splattered across the grass is a patch of some dark, semi-liquid substance. Laios goes to crouch near it and tentatively sniffs. It has an acrid scent, and squishes when Laios pokes it with his sword.

He looks over to his companion, smiling. "Isn't this neat? Giant spiders means giant frass."

It's a particularly hot, lazy day when Laios is back working on The Brave Boar, for a given value of working; the ship is tidy enough that Laios was left taskless, so he'd escaped to the deck with scrap paper and charcoal to try drawing some of the monsters he'd seen during the hunt.

He'd been so absorbed in it that he hadn't really registered the change in the lighting, nor looked up to see how the clouds in the sky were building. But the rest of the crew had, and recognized the signs of an incoming storm. And all too soon Laios was looking up, bewildered, as the deck suddenly was crawling with people.

There's a lot to do to keep a ship safe when a storm's on the way, and every sailor has a part to play. In Laios's case, he's being tasked with helping with the rigging-

"Whuff!"

-or at least, so he assumes from the rope a boatswain tosses him before he can so much as blink. A moment later that boatswain tosses another rope to a person nearby, and barks some orders at the both of them before stalking off to the next set of seamen.

Laios takes a moment to process, then turns to his companion. "Come on, then," he says. "I think we'd better get this done quick."

(Though he says this, he does crouch to quickly stuff his drawings and charcoal into his coat.)

As soon as Laios makes his find, Link dutifully jogs over to look at it. And it is, indeed, giant frass.

Link nods - it is neat, although maybe not as interesting to Link as it is to Laios. He'd much rather find the spider - and maybe see if he can harvest a few parts from it.

He looks around, keeping an eye on those webs in particular. Most of the spiders might be gone, but there could always be a straggler...

Link nods. As it turns out, he does have something. Because there's a new small brown pack hanging from his belt. It's not very big - just a handspan and a half wide - but Link pulls out of it a small glass bottle.

It's not the sort of thing you'd expect someone to carry in such a bag, actually. For a pack of that size, most people would prioritise many, many other things instead. But Link pulls one out without hesitation, and holds it out towards Laios.

Link takes the bottle, and it disappears into the pack. Then he nods, and does just what Laios suggested - keep moving.

This isn't an area Link is at all familiar with. But he looks comfortable out here all the same, moving through the wilderness.

He also quickly shows that he has a tendency to pick up things. Mushrooms. Flowers. Herbs. They all get picked up and put away in his pack - although Link is at least highly efficiently about it. He doesn't stop or slow down for it; just casually picks up anything of interest as they happen to walk by.

Sometimes, Link's answer to what a thing is is a shrug. He's not from this world, so he's not as familiar with the local flora as he is back home. But there's a few things he's managed to pick up, so he's not completely ignorant of the local wildlife.

At Laios's warning Link stills - eyes darting to the giant spider above, watching it closely.

Slowly - very slowly - Link crouches down, letting the tall grass hide him. Then reaches to take the bow from his back and notch an arrow.

"How are you at climbing?" Ilphyl asked. They were relatively new to shipboard life, but were athletic even ignoring their own magic, and had zero fear of heights or drowning. And the clouds coming up meant their vision was actually useful.

"Yeah. I was rescued last month," Ilphyl said. "I've been trying to get up to speed."

"I don't know much about knots, but I am a quick learner," Ilphyl said. "Even if I don't get it, I have good eyes and zero fear of heights."

This was Ilphyl's fifth language, counting their native language. The practice always helps, and Ilphyl is trying to pick up what they can.

"I've only been on a big ship once before getting here. And I was mostly helping out with lookout at night." And combat.

Nephenee's not super familiar with boats like some here, but she's spent enough time on them that she's had to help a few times. The young, tall, taciturn woman nearby tugs her hat down a bit harder, determination in the bright green eyes mostly hidden by it.

"Yup." Her normal stutter isn't almost completely gone in the face of the task ahead. No time to feel timid! "Ya done this 'fore?"
