Flotsam - Shipyard

[Harlock is likely far from the only one who is checking out the docked ships - the majority of them of course are seafaring vessels without the ability to fly. He's been on a sailing ship, but nothing to the surprisingly advanced looking tall ships and masts bobbing on the sea.

To get the Arcadia - and his eternal friend - back, he needs a ship, and to get a ship, he needs to know how to properly sail one of these, including how all the components work. After some convincing, anyone else with the same idea of checking the boat will see the one-eyed man sitting on a barrel, working a length of rough rope into knots, pursing his lips at a particularly tricky knot, or how to properly brace and load the guns so they don't go sliding all over the place. He gives a bemused grin to one of his fellow outworlders during the work.]

Seems the quickest way to learn something is when an old salt thinks they think can get a newbie to do their job for them.

[Despite the tone, one senses he's actually enjoying this]

Floating Dorm common area

[For the grunt work he did on the ships, he was given a little something, which he used to get some wood, and now he is carefully carving out into something vaguely football shape, he pauses to make circular marks, careful to get the wood shavings into the rubbish bin. What on earth is he making?]

Vault - Library time!

[Well, Astronomy is just a bit (actually quite) beyond him with his current literacy level with the native language, he's going to work on it - Harlock has a stack of fiction books meant for a younger reader, feeling a little embarrassed but pushing it down, as he sometimes reaches out and writes a word he can't seem to get from the context.

He suddenly stops, staring at the book incredulously, before giving a snort of derision]

'A good pirate never take another person's things?'

[He waves someone down]

Excuse me, can you tell me if I'm reading this bit right?

[Or wild card it, hit me up at [plurk.com profile] RShini if you got ideas or just wing it]

Floating Dorm

The T-800 was given a room in the dorms. It does not understand why. There's no need for it to have one. It doesn't sleep. It doesn't relax. It has no interest in mementos or souvenirs. Eventually, however, it came to the conclusion that it will need to rebuild its armoury, and the room is as good a place as any to store excess weaponry, even though the handgun it has managed to procure fits rather snugly inside its black leather jacket.

It does patrol the dorms, from time to time, in case of Imperial infiltration. Its sensors dutifully note and record all pertinent information (not much) and changes (not many). Harlock being in the common area after a few circuits is about the most exciting (not that the Terminator can get excited) thing to happen on this patrol.

He's scanned. He's logged. What he's working on is scanned.

It approaches slowly, attempting to get a better view of the block of wood Harlock is carving.

"What is the purpose of this exercise?" It asks. It has sunglasses now. Don't worry about it.

The cybernetic organism watches Harlock shave off the last strip of wood before closing the knife with an expression that might almost be curiosity. "Physical activity strengthens mental focus." It states. "Why is this?" Its files on humans are almost entirely concerned with biology and anatomy, to create a more efficient killing machine. But this is an entire new set of data to consider.

Harlock's missing ocarina is familiar; the weapons it had gathered since travelling back to the past had been seized almost immediately, and the probability of recovering them was non-existent. They were tools to it, however, nothing more.

"By constructing a new ocarina, you hope to gain clarity of thought. This is correct?" It asks.

"Understood." The T-800 replies. It has no such require ments; it shuts down unnecessary programs and reroutes processing power as necessary as problems or data to be analyzed arise. But humans are more limited in that regard. They cannot simply reroute their thoughts the way a machine can. They need a conduit for such a thing.

Harlock is an ally, at least by virtue of them both being members of the Crimson Corsairs. It moves around where he's sitting, and joins him. "Outline mission parameters. Assistance can be offered if needed." It says. There is more it could be doing, more it should be doing to get back to its primary mission. Helping Harlock helps the Corsairs.

I think I can, given how well you speak. What seems to be the issue?

[ When presented with the book in question, she will offer a polite laugh. ]

Well, perhaps a polite pirate, but not a very rich one.

You've picked it up pretty well, though you still have an unusual accent.

[ She nods emphatically, tapping the book with a finger. ]

I think this is actually a perfectly logical confluence of romantic piratical culture and moralizing children's literature. Once you see those two tendencies together...

[The woman with red fox ears and three tails glances over at the offending passage in the book, then squints at it as if she can’t believe what she just read.]

It says that good pirates don’t steal.

I mean, maybe if they’re the Pirates That Don’t Do Anything? Or if it doesn’t count if you have a letter -

- hell, I don’t know the word for it in Imperial, but like if a navy hired them to raid a different navy that’s totally not stealing, it’s salvage.

The letter would make them privateers, yeah. And yeah, I really doubt that the Spanish bought that excuse from English privateers.

...and if you know English that makes you an outworlder too. Does "Mundus" mean anything to you?

[Probably not, but hope springs eternal.]

[Musse happened to be in the Vault for some research when Harlock looked to wave a person down. She approached curiously]

Possibly, how do you think it's read?

Ah, that.

[Musse giggles a little]

It does help our reputation a little though, and we want to cast ourselves as heroic to the children who read these books. It's a bit more complicated in reality, but I can say with certainty the only people we take from are the Empire, never civilians.

[Maddie might not be one of the otherworlders but she still gives a ready grin with a slight tilt of her brows at his comment. She's carting some rope around herself, a stoutly-built woman who he might have seen wandering around in a far more inhuman look in the Flotsam dorms.]

You don't have to humor any of the old salts, you know.

[Her brows relax after as she drops the ropes nearby.]

I'm not going to stop you though if you want to.

[Thankfully in the moment she's very human looking! He's just likely seen her a whole lot less human looking no and then is all. For now she's pretty stoutly-built but just a human appearing as he is.

Well, maybe a bit more curious than him.]

You mean you have a ship?

[The grin (bemused though it may be) helps clue Laios in to the idea that Harlock may not be suffering through his chores, but he stills goes ahead and asks:]

Do you need any help?

From: [personal profile] xenovore
Sure. I've been living with Flotsam for a few years now, and you can't avoid learning a thing or two about ships under the circumstances.

[Laios moves a bit closer to get a better look at the knot Harlock's working on.]

You're helping to set up the running rigging?
