EVENT #05: FIREWORKS FOR NEW YEAR PREPARATION

With winter’s chill already setting in, Corsair laboratories are hard at work pumping out explosives for the operation to come. After extensive training, the crews of the Corsair airship brigade bring the infiltrators quietly to the Isles Above, all cabin lights doused to move stealthily to the drop point. There, Corsair specialists will disembark and plant explosives, as well as, perhaps, make contact with local workers and evacuate them if time permits. With all crews operating with quiet efficiency, the time is almost nigh to strike at the heart of the Empire itself.

Any mission marked Critical must have at least one log in progress by the end of the month to be counted as complete. Missing Critical missions will have major negative impacts on the Execution mission in the following month. Supplemental missions can be completed or not, completing them will go toward achieving optimal results during the Execution mission next month. As with Critical missions, Supplemental missions must have at least one log in progress by the end of the month to be counted as complete.

SUPPLIER MISSIONS

Create Explosives: Characters will need to create explosives and munitions for deployment.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: In order to get explosives that will make enough of a dent in the Imperial forces, Corsairs will need to develop them from the live rounds dropped above the vault. Logs can involve recovering salvage as well as construction of explosives.

Develop Precision Explosives: Characters will need to develop precision explosives to avoid undue damage to the civilians of Bluvink during the attack.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: This will require some research and development from suppliers to find explosives that will detonate at very specific levels in order to not cause the volatile materials within the Bluvink factory to ignite and cause wide-scale damage to the town.

Develop Communications Hijack: Characters will need to develop a tool that can hijack communications within the Empire.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: This will require recovering some Imperial communication technology from salvage or from the Vault and finding a way to dominate Imperial airwaves so they can’t shut down the Corsair propaganda.

INFILTRATOR MISSIONS

Set Explosives in Bluvink: Characters will need to sneak into the Bluvink factory and set explosives, preparing for them to explode during the New Year attack.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: The factory has regular guard rotations that can be figured out with proper observation, they will need to be avoided. The facility will also need to be properly cased so that the explosives can be set in places they will not be detected.

Set Explosives in the Vindess Mines: Characters will need to sneak into the Vindess Mines and set explosives, preparing for them to explode during the New Year attack.
Priority: Critical
Challenges: The mines have regular guard rotations and are constantly manned by serfs and servants. All will need to be avoided in order to set the explosives, and those manning the mines must be avoided at all costs.

NEGOTIATOR MISSIONS

Miner Negotiation: Characters will need to convince the miners to evacuate and to join with the Corsairs, as well as not tip off the Imperials.
Priority: Supplemental
Challenges: Many miners are distrustful of the Corsairs due to Imperial Propoganda, and several are Imperial loyalists even under the current circumstances. Several miners may need to be subdued in order to safely evacuate the area without their captors being alerted.

VILLAINS

Villain plots will be planned this month and will happen in the following month. Potential villains may post here to start workshopping potential plots that they may take part in next month.

In fact i am in, and i have a pitch:

Deedee, Donnie, and Harlock are a pretty good extraction team, and Natalia still has an inactive suppression collar.

Maybe the plan was for Natalia to infiltrate as a (fake) Servant first and get a better idea of the layout and leave via Harlock's ship after rendezvous with Donnie and Deedee.

Terra can probably fuck this up.

"My best friend," There's a softness to his voice, as he gives a moment's glance up towards the horizon before resuming. "He knows his way around machines like nobody else,"

A quiet exhale, a sharpening focus, he starts to gently lift, pausing when he feels a slight resistance, instead of forcing it, he carefully nudges it ever so slightly, not enough to jostle the content, but to get the frame to line up to lift it up in one smooth motion.

Trusting that the explosives he's helped finalize are in good hands, Donnie decides to put his other skills to better use. They still want to make sure the collateral damage is at a minimum, and after talks with Harlock, working out a way to draw people well away from the area they're going to wreak havoc in seems the best route.

At the same time, they don't want to get anyone hurt there either, so finding somewhere that will get enough attention but still not be too big of a threat will be ideal. Bonus points if it burns real bright!

The turtlekin hunkers down in the shadows of a rooftop, scarf pulled snug enough to hide the bottom portion of his face, hood shadowing the rest. He pulls the collar of his jacket closed, thankful for the warmth as up here it's even chillier. His eyes scan the streets below, and he slips his notepad out to add to the rough map he's made.

"I'm thinking..." he says, speaking into his ENC bracer, "-that we'll probably need to aim for somewhere a little closer to the target for this distraction to be effective. If it's well on the opposite side of the city, the people we want to draw away from that point might not feel bothered enough to investigate."

He glances at what he could see of the notes. Good, something to destroy machinery, something to trigger, Harlock already considered placements, but Donnie knows his explosions the best.

"Given our current knowledge of the factory, what would you say is our best placement for some of these?"

"Hmm...."

Donnie taps his pencil against his lower lip.

"While it's tempting to go as big as we can with a more centralized placement, we can't guarantee how chaotic things might get if and when things chain outwards."

He flips a few pages to a very rough outline of the factory, x's marking known machinery placement.

"Better to probably take things by sections, target equipment with the heat-packed ones, set the triggers- the small ones, that is- near them or paired with standard explosives where there aren't volatile materials. Also, we don't want to take out any exits, we should keep those as clear as possible. Same goes for windows, although we might not really be able to avoid them blowing out."

Link makes a soft noise of understanding, before pulling out one of the bomb flowers he has stored in his pack. He looks at Donnie, head tilted to one side in question.

Would Donnie like him to throw this one for testing?

At least Donnie expects this sort of thing from Link by now. He holds up a hand.

"Let me set up."

He moves to clear things from what's left of the other explosive tests, then sets up a small, empty barrel in the middle of a largish ring roughly drawn on the ground. He jogs back over, pausing as he considers something.

"...hm. I guess it'd be more difficult to trigger if we set it inside the barrel. Maybe if we flip it over and place it on top of it? It'll go off if you shoot an arrow at it, right?"

"Sounds good. I can only remember so much of the layout. And with the volatiles for welding..." She hums, tapping her figures. "If they are using the chemicals I might use, causing an over-pressure back-fire at the main line would be enough to send up their entire supply..."

Though who knew if acetylene was in use by the Empire, or if they had learned about its tendency to combust at pressures over a certain amount?

Certainly she didn't see it in the tables here. "Ignore me. I am playing chess without considering my opponent."

"No illusions or transformations," Deedee says. "What I've got are the power to call and direct gale force winds, supernaturally good athletics - superleaping, forcing open windows, kicking down locked doors. Subtlety isn't my strongest suit, but if we need to go loud..."

She squares her stance and puts a fist in her hand.

He nods, tapping his finger against the exits, tracing them towards the known machines. "Let's see... we should probably avoid this area if we want to try to keep exits free of debris then."

"Of course we can't predict how... flammable some of these are. But, let's see." He then taps a few places he thought looked good. "These look like some good points of interest to me."

"True enough," Donnie nods. "I can account for the type of materials that would commonly be found in such production, but even then it's mostly estimations since I don't have any exact numbers. That and proximity, as well as potential additional hazards if things mix. It's going to be impossible to be accurate."

He circles the places that Harlock points out. "I'll have to cross reference with any updated maps we get and make the suggestions."

Link nods his head rapidly. Yes, shooting an arrow at the flower would trigger an explosion.

So he places the bomb flower on top of the barrel - probably not as carefully as Donnie would like, but gently enough. And then moves back, grabbing his bow as he does so.

He only notches an arrow though, and holds it loosely. He's not aiming it just yet - instead looking at Donnie, and waiting for an instruction to fire.

Donnie at least figures Link should know how delicate the flower is to not set it off with simple movements, but he's a bit tense all the same.

He waits until Link's back behind the wall that's there for cover, doing a quick check through his goggles before he pushes them up. Looks good to him. It's a pretty rudimentary sort of test but it should still give them the results they need.

"Whenever you're ready," he says, nodding at Link.

"Need to carry 'em further uphill," Senshi says, pouring out tea from a thermos to people who badly need it. "If we had the proper equipment, it'd be a button press, but some bean-counter figures breaking people's cheaper than fixing broken machines."

The venom in his voice is real.

Rather than speaking, he gestures - holding up a spread palm, then pointing the way. Mimicking a bird falling over and then pantomiming a pair of legs running for a certain direction.

Five more charges to place. Next one's this way. If the canary faints, abort mission and run for the exit.

Atom looks around at the group of people they need to sneak in. He's sure just the three of them could make it easily in less than two minutes, but with multiple more following, it's more risky.

"Maybe we can combine the ideas? Deedee is acrobatic enough to leap where the guards aren't looking. Do you think you can create a noise to draw their attention away from the factory entrance, then rejoin us without being seen?" he asks her.

Atom then looks to Natalia for her opinion. "In the meanwhile we can take advantage of the delay of the guards and sneak the group in with more time to spare."

“I can knock things over with wind spells for your distraction,” Deedee says, frowning. “And from there… I think I can manage avoiding attention long enough to rejoin you. I’m a little worried about how much Qi - Ether I’ll burn but I’ve been working on my capacity.”

Ziel’s breathing techniques did not come easily to Deedee, but she had been practicing, and they were working.

What Atom sees of her ascent to the assigned places makes it clear why she was confident in her ability to scale the factory. She's like an acrobat, he notes, reminded of robots and people from the circus he was once a part of.

Atom kicks off the cheap sandals he was wearing and fires up his feet, flying up to plant his share of the explosives high on the support beams above. At least if the Imperials caught on that something odd was happening at the factory, they would have a hard time finding the charges that were higher up and facing away from the floor. He hurries to return to the ground, not wanting to keep an open flame alight for long even with the wide space away from the danger zones. He slips his sandals back on and looks around to check on others' progress.

"It's not a waste- you could be on to something! I know there was a list of the volatile chemicals at the factory around here somewhere..." He calls back the memory and locates the paper he's referring to, holding it out to her. "We can check the books for information on their reaction to pressure. Even if it's not the answer for this mission, it could be useful in the future."

"Sounds like this kind of thing would be easy for him," Atom suggests. "Has he ever worked on robots before?" He hadn't forgotten that Harlock was one of the people who knew what a robot was when he introduced himself.

Atom watches closely for obstructions and uses his smaller fingers to feel under the frame for any caught pieces just in case. Thankfully his scans were accurate and nothing was sticking to the frame. Beneath the frame piece is the heart of the Imperial ammunition, containing explosives in the form of several cylinders containing the dangerous chemicals. Between each of the cylinders were minor projectiles, and down the middle was the fuse that had not successfully lit during testing. Atom points out the cylinders as the explosives they want.

Acetylene... Under normal conditions it would happily stay where it was until sparked. In situations of high pressure, however, it could spontaneously combust. Back home, it was too useful for making other chemicals and as a fuel. If they didn't have arc-welding yet-- something she doubted they had at all-- then it was one of the only things hot enough, on demand, to weld steel that she could think of. Magic could get this hot, she was sure-- and it would probably be safer-- but that might require Ether Stones, and those were expensive. A theft risk! Ha, no.

"... There's a lot of volatiles here. But..."

The main storage was... she tapped it, on one of her sketches of the layout. "We'd have to set it off directly, I think. They keep the storage away from the shop floor. More for the shop floor than the people, I imagine."

"That was interesting."

Renne casually emerges from the shadows behind Atom, her tone mild. "I don't think I know an art that can cast fire from your feet."
