06 - Hearty fish chowder; fresh bread and butter; char-grilled eels on rice; coffee

01: sustenance
With refugees in the Vault, the Milk Run as a business is less important than making sure the new ones, the strangers, are properly fed. Senshi and anyone capable who cares to help him have set themselves to this task, making sure there’s enough nice hot soup and bread for any starving miner or factory worker, now cut off from their old life, to at least not have to worry about their next meal.

Whenever possible Senshi takes a moment to make sure the new uns are settled in and have a warm bed, and does his best to make them feel welcome, but he knows with a crowd this size that’s not always possible. So many mouths, so little time. Still, he makes the new arrivals feel human whenever he can.

02: luxury
Senshi is going around with a survey, asking new and old what luxury foods and ingredients they most miss from the Empire and carefully noting down the answers in a notebook.

If asked why, he says, “Simple: next time I’m out shopping with the Milk Run, I’ll try to find some.”

He’s dead serious.

What flavors and treats do you miss most?

Hades Introduction Meeting [All PC Corsairs Invited]

Mid-month, leaders of the Corsairs send word to multiple highly regarded individuals among their ranks, asking them to go to The Vault for a meeting. To meet someone of utmost importance. His identity is to be kept secret from the Empire at all costs, and we have decided to limit the number of those who are given this information for now.

The meeting takes place behind closed doors in a small lecture hall. The Vault's higher ranking scholars, who take up most of the select crowd, are found speaking enthusiastically to each other. This is something of great interest to them and pens are at the ready.

When everyone is settled into their seats, a man rises from his seat, tapping his way to the center of the lecture floor. He fiddles with the end of his cane, smiling at the crowd and greeting them after pushing his dark glasses up his nose.

"Hi! Thanks for coming, everyone. My name is Matthias Meerdock, but please call me Matt. I was previously a private investigator, and yes, I am blind. If you're wondering, I worked with a sighted partner on cases. My other senses are abnormally strong though, so I pick up on other details. Smells, sounds... But I'm not actually here to talk to you about that."

He clears his throat and purses his lips, hesitating for a short moment at the intimidating weight of the message he bears. He pushes onward.

"The old religion says that ages ago, The Pantheon of Gods came upon a wealth of Ether, and used it to build our world. Together the gods controlled and shaped the elements to mold the lands, the Eternal Ocean, the life, and the Peoples of Esthere.

Backdated to post-Raid/Terra rescue

He wasn't as bad off as the rest, but he is feeling it, and the phantom vision hasn't quite gone away. The pirate reluctantly heads to the infirmary just to make sure there wasn't anything permanently wrong. Harlock seemed to have enter right when a healer had stepped out for a moment, he took the moment to look the place over, mulling over the realities of the world in his mind - healing magic, commanding elements, what exactly are the limits, how they work...

Which meant when he heard someone moving, the space pirate actually started, quickly turning to see who it was - maybe it was a healer so he can get it over with, or a patient who actually needs someone more apt at medicine than he was.

Vault - Armor Training

He suspected he did as well as he did in covering their retreat was a mixture of Donnie having his back, and being just too tired and hurt for his muscle memory to trip him up. After some lessons, he could be found in the Feder, having decided he favor it's mobility over the benefits of the other suits.

After a particularly rough series of pivoting - practically drifting - and leaping, he overcorrects, nearly stumbling before it skids to a halt, smoke coming out of a leg joint.

"Damn...!" He cursed under his breath as the Armor opens, unbuckling himself to jump out and see what happened.

Elysium - Drinking, Again. [cw: Alcohol and alcohol-related nonsense]

The mood in Waterlogged row is largely celebrant, thought there was an underlying tension of uncertainty and dread due to the significant change in the status quo.

At this point, Harlock has become a regular at a particular tavern - the Staggering Magpie - a rather apt name for a gathering of drunken reprobates. The one-eye pirate took to a seat against the wall, and kept mostly to himself.

Tonight was however different, as a literal bear of a man plunked himself across from the man, and ordered several shot glasses to be brought over. Harlock simply raised his brows but did not refuse the obvious overtures of what looks to be the start of a drinking contest.

Fourth Quest: Makeovers, Magic, and Meditation

1: Makeovers
Deedee has, after a rough month, healed enough to start treating people in the spa and in her space in the Vault, personally, again. She's a little worse for wear, of course - but she's turned half of her hair burning off into an excuse for a hairstyle where half her head is shaved, and the other is in a side ponytail; it's a good look on her, if a bit... butch for her tastes.

As promised, she's doing a sale on beauty treatments; haircuts, dye-jobs, mani-pedis, nail painting. While she's still healing with her hands, she's also giving people new looks with a smile.

2: Magic
During her time healing and enforced Vault time, Deedee has been studying magic diligently, not wanted to get caught flatfooted by Imperial witches - be they jannisaries or otherwise - ever again. She's be studying the theory, practicing the techniques Ziel taught and in classrooms, and she finally feels like she's going to make a breakthrough.

Which is when you may find her in a training hall across from a candle, sitting seiza, taking deep breaths, fingers in a mudra before her. She exhales -

- a gout of flame that lights the candle, without melting it.

She opens her eyes, and whoops triumph.

3: Meditation

There is a shrine in the courtyard of the spa, now.

It doesn't advertise it's religious affiliation. To those who don't know what it is, it just looks like a pleasant little open-air structure; in moments of weakness Deedee refers to it with a smile as "The Dread Gazebo." But it has windchimes, and streamers of red tipped with white triangular "tails," and a central altar made of little brass flutes that catch the wind to make music; and every so often, you can see Deedee in there, meditating in motion, by dancing or practicing her martial arts.

It is her way of thanking and honoring Sylphan for delivering on his half of a vow made in desperation and in earnest; to help them free Terra Branford, and live to see her live free.

All are welcome to pray to Sylphan, the trickster-fox, the laughing wind, friend of travellers and fools, foe of tyrants - if you have need of him.

Just call him Pikachu! 🗲 [open]

1. Success! 🗲

Atom had studied thoroughly and taken the advice of others seriously. He practiced what Ziel had taught him, and he meditated at the start and end of each day, trying to become attune to the energy of ether around him and within him.

Then finally, one of the many beginner spells he tried produced a reaction. The most basic of electricity spells produced bright sparks at his fingertips. Atom was both surprised and felt something else... Perhaps what humans might call "deja vu"? It had been "in his veins" so to speak, all along.

From that day forward began his daily practice. One might find him when going to The Vault's target range near the spaces reserved for sparring. The other Corsairs toss the odd remark of advice to him here and there in passing, and after a while they aren't surprised to see the kid show up. He still has to recite incantations, but the power output of his practice attacks show promise, and he generally has good aim. All thanks to calculations and monitoring power levels, he explains to those curious.

Atom can be found in the middle of practice with his arms outstretched, sending sparks at a practice target across the range, his eyes lit up in a new blue color like the ether stone that Donnie had implanted in him several months ago.

2. One but make it silly.

After a long round of practice, Atom realizes he is late to join the others for dinner. He stops short of using another spell, and hurries toward the back of the large room where he had left the latest spell book. Halfway across, he pats the top of his head, realizing the static left on him had made the strands of hair he could never quite tame stand up even more than usual.

He tries to brush his hair down, lost in thought for a moment, when a particularly loud explosion above The Vault makes whole place quake. Atom startles, and the excess electricity built up by his interrupted practice leaves his body by shooting out behind him and frying one of the practice dummies nearby. Specifically, shooting out from his rear.

Atom turns to see what just happened, eyes wide and face going red, piecing together what happened but not quite sure if the energy had left him where he thought it had. Did anyone see that?

Episode 1: A Flower Outside The Imperial Garden

1: Advanced Armor Training (Flotsam)
The building wasn't exactly new, but it was set up like a lecture hall, and slowly filling up with wannabe Armor pilots and people who had piloted an armor before but had never really fully learned the trick. There were even a couple Outlanders out there who were eager to get in the control harness.

"GOOD MORNING, SPOKEN AND GENTLEKIN!" Kanna may not be the best teacher, but if there was one thing she knew, it was piloting Armors, and a few tricks that even someone without her reserves of Ether could manage. "I'm Kanna Chrysanthemum, and welcome to Advanced Armor Tactics, a series of lectures and practical training in how to pilot Giant Armors, heading into tactics suited for the half-lance composition the Corsairs are using right now. Some of you may be wondering what an actress is doing up here, I'll get to that, don't worry.

"I'm going to assume that if you're here, you've already got the basics of moving in a Giant Armor down, and you wanna start learning how to fight in the things, because as I'm sure those of you who have tried have noticed, it's not quite like moving your body. It's my hope that by the time we're done here, just about any set of tactics you can manage on foot, you can do in Giant Armor."

If you want to have some training to do things in Armors better, this is the place to come!

2: Flowers and Purity (Elysium)
"Let's see... If I remember where Link and I went... Yeah! This is the place."

The wilderness of Elysium suddenly cleared, to a pond and a waterfall, around which several animals were gathered, wary, as always.

Mists from the waterfall filled the air, and the scent of the cave behind it hinted at what was beneath.

But that's not why she's here today, that's for later.

"So, how d'you like it?"

3: Flowers and Nutrition (general)
Kanna tended to eat a lot. Being pretty active on her own initiative, using Ether operating Armors, working out for hours-- all of it works up an appetite, and she's six and a half feet tall. So, when it came to barracks food, she wanted plenty and probably more than average.

Which is why she was here, in a communal kitchen, cooking up vegetables, fish, rice, and whatever other things she could get her hands on to sate it.

Mind you, she probably shouldn't be here, if only because the cooks will be mad, but she keeps odd hours, and so! The sound and smell of saute, the bubbling of pots, the drama of if she'll finish before someone comes to investigate--!

乙巳 004: 大寒

Greetings again, Corsairs.

[As usual, following a bow, Shu addresses the video feed with perfect poise and elegance.]

After the... challenging events of the New Year's mission, I wish to call for some levity. In Yan, as the year changes, we visit the temples to have our fortunes told for the coming year. It is just for fun, of course. In Dahuang, I keep a place of worship to... [a faint pause] a Xian of agriculture, Shennong, and occasionally run the festivities.

Please come by. There will be traditional New Year's food, of course.

[If anyone has learned anything about Yan at this point, it is that they have Too Many Holiday Traditions and Too Much Food.]

[option 1: just for fun]
[Shu's doorway is vibrantly decorated in red and gold, and when she ushers you in, the most immediate sight is the table filled with plates and plates of food. Mostly dumplings, for dumplings are easiest for visitors, but also whole fish, noodle dishes, and sticky rice.

To the side, there is a little chest with two sets of burning incense at either side. Fortune seekers are invited to kneel, burn incense if they wish, pray for luck from whatever deity or the general karmic wheel of the universe, and then reach out for a container of what look like sticks. There is a little sign explaining this is the tradition of 'qiu qian,' beseeching insight from the gods.

One must ask a clear question, shake the container a few times, and pull out a stick.]

[option 2: the real thing]
[Shu sits at her 'priest's seat' and laughs lightly at the interpretation of the fortune received. Perhaps she sees something more ponderous in your eyes, for after a moment or two, she clasps her hands together and exhales lightly, bowing her head.

Her red pupils have constricted to tiny dots when she raises her head once more.]

...I could give you a better fortune, if you wish.

((If you pick option 2, Shu will either tell you in very vague prophetic terms something that may or may not happen in the future of your canon, something that happened in the past of your canon, or give you a random item that might be useful to you this year. If you pick option 1, it will be total nonsense.))

A Belated New Year's gift-giving to all! [Open]

Who: Nephenee and YOU
What: Nephenee's handing out gifts for all the Corsairs! Yes, we said all! And even some non-Corsairs!
Where: All around the place (seriously)
When: Shortly after the fireworks
Warnings: None known, will edit if needed

It'd been not that long ago that a certain Sentinel and Corsair learned of gift giving for the solstice and for New Year's, and being the type of girl who likes to take care of everyone, she jumped at the chance to do so. So she's been working like mad to prepare things for everyone.

Unfortunately, little things like missions got in the way. But that's over now, and the oven's been blazing like mad for a good long while. The kitchen smells like sweet, buttery heaven, and once the last bunch is done, she grabs the more personalized gifts, and heads off to hand out everything!

So when she finds you, you get a hopeful, and a bit shy, "H-Howdy!" The tall woman's in her normal blue armour, but there's a little blue scarf around her neck over her orange neckerchief, too. It's the only warm-looking thing on her. Other than her cheeks, that is; those are bright red. "Ah, uh, gotta present for New Year's for ya."

[OOC: EVERYONE gets gifts! If you're close CR, you get personalized gifts! And if you're injured? YOU'RE GETTING HEALS AND GIFTS.

No, it doesn't matter if she knows you or not. If you're here, you get a thing.]

Quest 07 (Open + Closed)

i. Making new, wolfy friends [Open]
In the wild areas near Elysium, Link’s been exploring. It’s a common activity for him. There’s mushrooms and flowers to pick, game to hunt, monsters to fight…

…Then one day, while he’s up in a tree collecting some bird’s eggs, he spots a wolf. A big wolf. A really, really big wolf. It’s as big as a horse.

And once he makes that mental connection, Link immediately thinks, I could ride that.

Which naturally means Link now has to find out if he can. He pulls out a Sneaky Elixir, and swiftly swallows it - demeaning the sounds of his movements. Silently uses his paraglider to move from tree to tree, getting closer. And then carefully drops down behind the massive, monstrous wolf.

He crouches down. Creeps forward. Slowly, slowly. Until he’s right behind the beast, so close he could reach out and touch its fur.

And then he leaps up onto its back, and grabs on.

The wolf yelps and snarls - but Link’s got a good position, and he doesn’t let it twist back and bite him. He just directs the beast to run, and keeps a good hold.

What do you know, he can ride it!

ii. A retrieval of memories [locked to Shu]
Shu had spoken to the Admiral. They’d tracked down the Imperial Commander who’d been given Link’s Purah Pad.

And then they’d sneaked onto the Commander’s warship and completely trashed his quarters.

Well, Link had trashed his quarters. Shu was a bit too dignified for such wanton destruction, but Link wasn’t. And he didn’t regret it either, since in the process, he’d found the Pad!

Now, their getaway was nearly complete. Here in a small alleyway in Elysium, they were far from the scene of the crime. The Crimson Portal wasn’t far off.

But Link had to pause. He hadn’t had a chance yet, but - he had to see. Were all of his pictures still on the Purah Pad? Were they safe?

He pulls out the Pad, and turns it on. And turns to the photo gallery.

iii. Link has a slide show and he’s gonna make you watch it [semi-closed]
Later, Link thinks of all the new people he’d met. People who’d helped him grow plants from home, or who’d shown interest in things from his home. Shu wasn't the only one who he knew would like to see his pictures.

Before, he hadn't had any way of sharing these images of his home. But…now he could.

So Link tracks those people down. Says, “Hi,” when he finds them. And then shoves the Purah Pad - with a picture from Hyrule that would interest them on the screen - right in their face.

[[ooc: this prompt is for Nephenee, Ilphyll, Donnie, Maomao and Atom - but could be open to others if there's a reason for Link to decide to share]]

05 - Saurbraten; potato dumplings; gravlax with bagels; wine-braised cabbage; toasted cheese platter

1: New Year’s Resolution
Senshi’s somber mood of the last month has been wholly exorcized, and the dwarf is in his usual high spirits. He’s offering a mix of traditional New Years foods from the Imperial middle class, as well as drawing attention to an expanded grocery section with delicacies like sugar, coffee, cocoa, spices and all manner of fresh and frozen things.

“Let me know if you have any special orders, and I’ll let you know if it can be done for next month,” he offers.

2: Of Dice And Tallmen
Gambling games are a new year’s tradition, but Senshi doesn’t want to clean people out - just to offer a context for sitting around ordering drinks and the kind of snacks invented by enterprising earls with only one free hand.

His solution is a particular dice game.

“It’s called Karvanibai - Archer’s Target. Bunch of orcish hunters taught it to me,”* he says. “First player rolls two dice. They win on 2 or 7 - otherwise, what they roll is the target. Players roll off until they roll 7 or 12 and lose, or hit the target and win; then the next person makes the first shot. It’s a fair game, I’m making my money off of serving you beer. Who’s in?”

3: Gone Fishin
Sometime, Senshi is above decks, with a fishing rod and a long line, and some bottled beers, and tries to see what he can reel in.

Most of his stuff for sale? Bought from Wholesalers or ideally the fishers themselves. This is for fun, and he knows it, and waves at those taking an interest - as well as offering a seat. Stay a while, see what’s biting.

[[*my friend Qoheleth actually made it up for a Wonders of Mundus campaign, where it was canonically Orcish in origin.]]

Chimera Corsair: I

I: Hitting the Books (Vault)

Despite her large size, formidable strength and unusual physiognomy, she did find time to perch - perhaps on the very largest and tallest chair available to the library, likely as not seated comfortably on a tabletop of some particularly sturdy material. She was once again engrossing herself in research, this time delving into the intricacies of the local language and of all things, the units of measure involved with cooking. She was certainly not so involved in her reading that she could not see anything else that was moving - her long habits being what they were.

II: Of the Prices of Ale (General)

So where would a 7'8" black and white chimera with an unusual eye, enough strength to carry a motorcycle and the skills of a long-range killer and spy take her ease? The tavern, of course! She would find her way to the alehouse, the Corsairs' source of drinks, the place that tended to attract more wanderers, strangers and such that a certain Mesopotamian space station. She would seek and locate a stool tall and sturdy enough to hold her remarkably muscular hindquarters far enough from the ground that she would in fact relax atop it and even keep her tail from becoming a hazard to navigation. She tended to look for darker ales, when she was in a more social mood - which she was. And when really wishing for a strong one, something clear with more bite than every snap of the world's most famous archaeologist's whip. She would look then to see who else was in the place, since this was now the point of contact for meeting others in the same line.

III: What Snows of the New Year (General)

The new year had arrived, and it was not long since she had arrived. She found herself walking outside near the docks, as most bundled themselves away or worked upon the ships as she strode past. She was relaxed, surprisingly so, and lightly dressed for once. She then found a place far from dishing lines, boats and ships and there was her goal, the frigid waters - and soon she was swimming as she had only in her wintry home waters and then, she was on the shore, taking in the wintry sun with all the joy some would see on a tropical summer beach - and there was certainly enough room if any were at least going to see what she was about, or even swim.

"Of the Wastelands"

-1: He's back-

As anyone who knows him can attest, Ziel was not the most social of men. His gloomy demeanor gave him limited energy for dealing with others, and he often spent whole days in private, reading or meditating or just staring at the ceiling grappling with depression.

But it had been about a month since anyone last saw him. His room still had a few personal effects lying around it, if anyone cared to investigate, implying that he was PROBABLY planning on returning, but there was no information left about where he had gone.

As winter started drawing in, and both the Corsairs and the Empire bowed their heads to the greater power of Shit Weather, Ziel reappeared just like he vanished, with no fanfare at all. One day he was just back, trudging the halls of the Vault with clothes looking even more threadbare and dirty than usual. He even had a beard.

-2: He was busy-

The Corsairs are perpetually short on supplies of various kinds, so any kind of salvage that members brought back from excursions were usually welcome. There was probably a specific department dedicated to handling it. That's where Ziel was now. He looks like he's been living in the woods for a month, and smells like it too, but he has several bulging bags he's turning in.

Wandering the world of Esthere, aside from people and mundane animals, are various powerful beasts infused by so much ether that only the most skilled and well equipped hunting parties would consider taking them on. But to those who can face such beasts, the spoils are great.

Ziel's bags were full of hides from behemoths that could be tanned into leather armor harder and lighter than plate mail, tusks and fangs that could cut like the finest of blades, ether crystals that formed in the bodies of monsters with unique energy signatures, dried meat that would infuse anyone who ate it with ether, rare medicinal herbs (though not a lot of those. Ziel wasn't much of an herbalist.), and other such grisly trophies.

The woman behind the desk was staring at the pile of loot with a mixed expression. On one hand, this was undeniably a large amount of extremely useful materials. On the other hand, the aroma rising from Ziel and his bounty was...intense.

-3: But civilization makes its own demands-

Eventually, someone discreetly brought up with Ziel that living in the wastelands by himself for a month had had a few minor effects on his personal hygiene.

Fortunately, Elysium had facilities for that.

Armed with a heavy wallet from his...findings, Ziel decided to actually enjoy himself for once and went for the FULL spa treatment. Massages, extensive bathing, a full shave, a good sauna soak. Ziel even had a visit with a tailor.

The tall, good looking man in well cut robes who returned to the Vault afterwards was barely recognizable as the stinking caveman who had lurched in the other day.

Second Invocation

Literary Mystery (Vault)

While browsing the library, Rezo has come across a shelf he's yet to explore. He pulls out a random book, and soon realizes that there's something different about it. It's larger and heavier than most of the library's books and there's no writing on the front, although examining the spine he does find "Prayers to Hades," "4 VOLUMES," and "Volume 1" written on the side.

And inside, the book is unlike any he's familiar with. The pages are comprised of a stiff, thick paper, and instead of inked letters the pages are covered with innumerable embossed dots. A quick inspection of other books on the shelf confirms they're the same way: Dotted patterns on thick paper instead of regular writing.

After feeling them out for a bit he becomes certain that the dots are a code of some sort, though it would take him a while to decode it.

Or he could just ask the first available person.

"Excuse me," he says. "Do you know what this book is?"

Localized Magic (Vault)

Whenever Rezo casts a spell, he always casts it in his native language. Thus far this hasn't been a problem, but recent conversations have made him reflect on how tricky this might make teaching his spells to anyone else.

He has also recalled how the lost holy magic of his world was traditionally cast in the Draconic language.

Thus, Rezo has brought himself to the Vault training halls to do a little translation work.

"Oh source of all power, oh bright burning violet flame, take it and be my strength."

As he chants the Imperial words, a small ball of purplish, reddish fire forms between his hands, and at the end of the spell he launches it out at the target. The fireball flies forward and hits the top of the target and with a quiet fwumff sets it alight with a smokey fire. The whole target doesn't immolate, just the part that the fireball touched, although the fire is spreading at a very slow rate.

Rezo moves over to the target and cautiously holds his hand out towards the fire, checking the ambient heat.

Doctor's Appointment (Anywhere)

If you asked Rezo to describe himself he'd say he's first and foremost a healer, and on some days he might even believe what he says.

Regardless of his own opinion, Rezo does in fact spend a lot of time volunteering at the various clinics run by the Corsairs, treating various injuries and sicknesses with a mixture of magic, medicines, and a pinch of practical first aid and nursing techniques. If you've come to see him then you're probably at a Vault hospital, but he also often travels to Flotsam or Elysium to work at the clinics there- particularly after the assault on Flotsam before the great sea hunt.

Perhaps you're a walk-in situation, here with an unexpected injury. Or perhaps you've made an appointment in advance, or are even a regular visitor to the clinic Rezo's taking a shift at, or to his dorm at the Vault. Regardless of who you are, Rezo always starts off the appointment with a kindly smile and the question "How are you feeling today?"
