I can fly, so I volunteered to help keep the armors busy. I forced them to fight me, and even when they tried to get away, I didn't let them. That way, they couldn't attack our fighters boarding their ships, or our own airships.
I could dodge most of what they threw at me, but they got lucky a few times.
