It's strange to think that Shu might have ever been callous or uncaring towards humans—their lives, and their toils. One supposes that spending so much time with this caring, patient farmer—one "unparalleled among men"—could have easily changed her outlook.
"I hope she agrees to stay." Aira holds Shu's eye, speaking softly. Then she shrugs a little. "But I get that not every story has to have a happy ending."
