Admittedly, it wasn't quite the same logic with Link's back - after all, he'd stuffed plenty of living lizards, bugs, and snails in there. But there clearly was some kind of restriction at play.
And Link won't say no to Ilphyl's help either - picking up any weeds that Ilphyl digs out. And if there's any their cat claws can't handle, Link will take over and pull it out.
