Ones that are mostly empty have sounds feel different than ones that have stalagmites or something." Especially important when that emptiness was due to a drop.
Most of the time on the surface, Ilphyl was getting too much information from their vision to pay close attention to sound. Unless they were missing their eye protection and dealing with sun-blindness, in which case, it was useful.
