Quest 07 (Open + Closed)

i. Making new, wolfy friends [Open]
In the wild areas near Elysium, Link’s been exploring. It’s a common activity for him. There’s mushrooms and flowers to pick, game to hunt, monsters to fight…

…Then one day, while he’s up in a tree collecting some bird’s eggs, he spots a wolf. A big wolf. A really, really big wolf. It’s as big as a horse.

And once he makes that mental connection, Link immediately thinks, I could ride that.

Which naturally means Link now has to find out if he can. He pulls out a Sneaky Elixir, and swiftly swallows it - demeaning the sounds of his movements. Silently uses his paraglider to move from tree to tree, getting closer. And then carefully drops down behind the massive, monstrous wolf.

He crouches down. Creeps forward. Slowly, slowly. Until he’s right behind the beast, so close he could reach out and touch its fur.

And then he leaps up onto its back, and grabs on.

The wolf yelps and snarls - but Link’s got a good position, and he doesn’t let it twist back and bite him. He just directs the beast to run, and keeps a good hold.

What do you know, he can ride it!


ii. A retrieval of memories [locked to Shu]
Shu had spoken to the Admiral. They’d tracked down the Imperial Commander who’d been given Link’s Purah Pad.

And then they’d sneaked onto the Commander’s warship and completely trashed his quarters.

Well, Link had trashed his quarters. Shu was a bit too dignified for such wanton destruction, but Link wasn’t. And he didn’t regret it either, since in the process, he’d found the Pad!

Now, their getaway was nearly complete. Here in a small alleyway in Elysium, they were far from the scene of the crime. The Crimson Portal wasn’t far off.

But Link had to pause. He hadn’t had a chance yet, but - he had to see. Were all of his pictures still on the Purah Pad? Were they safe?

He pulls out the Pad, and turns it on. And turns to the photo gallery.


iii. Link has a slide show and he’s gonna make you watch it [semi-closed]
Later, Link thinks of all the new people he’d met. People who’d helped him grow plants from home, or who’d shown interest in things from his home. Shu wasn't the only one who he knew would like to see his pictures.

Before, he hadn't had any way of sharing these images of his home. But…now he could.

So Link tracks those people down. Says, “Hi,” when he finds them. And then shoves the Purah Pad - with a picture from Hyrule that would interest them on the screen - right in their face.

"Oh, hey, fish tickling. That takes me back." Kanna looks out in the water. Of course her cannonball spooked some of the fish, but curiosity and lack of sudden death will get the better of them eventually.

As to the pad itself, Kanna's interested, but didn't see any of the photos just yet, so how could she know the Pad can do it? "So what's it do?"

"The Creatures one. If that's all right."

Renne fully understands, after all she would be in much the same state with her own ENC.

"Here, let's sit at this table. You can watch what I'm doing."

She sets the two down at an open-air table, facing opposite each other and withdraws a small cord. Her own ENC appears to have been heavily modified - Link might recall her using it in the fight to directly cast magic. She plugs the cord into both ENCs and begins typing on her own.

"The program I'm giving you is one of my own design - it will allow you to easily ping connected allies with a variety of alerts. Things like 'caution', 'emergency', 'need assistance', 'warning', 'retreat', and the like. It's quite versatile and adding new commands is pretty easy."

As she speaks, Link will see the program quickly transfer itself into his own ENC.

It's a lot of conflicting emotions, really, after that moment: melancholy from a wave of homesickness hitting all at once, yes, but also happiness for him getting back something that lets him see things from home, and a tiny twinge of jealousy that will never be admitted to and is quickly shoved to the back...

She's quiet as she sorts the emotions out and tries to pile them to the side. It doesn't entirely work, because frankly that side is getting crowded. But she looks at the pretty scene all the while, and finally looks up to him, her smile a little more wistful than she realizes. But it is genuine, because she truly is happy Link has this precious item full of even more precious mementos. "It's lovely...may Ah...look a lil' closer?" She gingerly holds out a hand, knowing some might be reluctant to part with something like this for awhile after just getting it.

"No luck tracking them down yet? This is new, right?" Donnie says, tapping at the pad. No, he hasn't let go just yet because he is a teenager after all.

Link's fish gets swiftly put away into his trusty Korok-enchanted pack - although since it's currently underwater, it might be a little hard to see. Either way, the fish isn't in Link's hands anymore.

(Neither is the Purah Pad, actually - it too seemed to appear and disappear mysteriously...)

"Pictures. Compendium. Notes. Map. Teleporting," he says, as he starts swimming over to the waterfall.

Link nods, and opens up the Creatures tab - revealing an array of animals, their pictures arranged in a grid of thumbnails.

It starts off with horses, before moving to creatures. Most of them are the normal, usual animals one might expect to see - although there's a few odd entries. Like that skeleton horse, for one. And a glowing, owl-faced rabbit like creature. And a very odd looking large luminous frog...

Link looks at Ilphyl, head tilted to one side. Which ones does he want to look at?

Link watches everything she does with an intense, unwavering focus. Is he fascinated by what she's doing, or is he just making real sure that she doesn't run off with his device?

Maybe it's both.

He ends up learning over to stare at the screen, practically getting in her space, by the time she ends her explanation. His eyes are still wide.

He's never going to have to talk to anyone on a mission ever again!

Link's rather possessive about his things. Especially important things, like the Purah Pad or his paraglider. It wasn't something he would give up easily to just anyone.

But...he'd gotten to know Neph. About as well as he knew anyone else in this world. She's a friend. So he lets her take the device.

"You'll like the Compendium," he says.

Really, the Compendium was the thing he was here to show her. He just started off with the nice pretty landscape with the Silent Flowers, because he knew she'd like it.

Link shook his head. No, he didn't have the rockets yet. This was the trouble with Link's stolen belongings: there was so much of them, and they'd ended up scattered all over the Empire. It made tracking them down difficult.

But he had the Purah Pad, now. Which Link absolutely does not let go of either.

"Shu helped find it," he says.

She nods along with his explanation. Damn. Pretty usefu-- TELEPORTATION!?

Okay, no, she only knows one person who can teleport on their own, this needs investigation. She starts to swim after him.

Hm. How's the ground under the waterfall? Decently solid?

"You WILL let me know how this works so I can make improvements, yes?"

Renne is watching his reaction carefully. She's glad he seems to like it, but she also hopes she's not enabling total silence.

She would, if it weren't for the abominations! Actually, she's quite interested in anything a botany compendium might have to say about the odd flora in his world, and she can sense even without words that Link would prefer the subject changed. Regretfully, she cannot quite make sense of the symbols. She scrolls towards the literal cartoon bomb on a stalk.

"What is this, exactly?"

Doubtless another aberration created by the Blood Moon of Calamitous Upheaval.

Maybe curb your ah...collecting habits there, buddy?

Donnie taps at the screen, trying to figure out what else the thing does. How do you access anything with this? He can't turn it over very well given Link's still hanging onto it, so he'll have to make do because he's stubborn. And curious.

"Shu, huh? Not surprised." He smiles fondly. Shu's one of his favorite people.

Link was already moving on ahead, blissfully unaware of the kind of response his offhand comment was provoking.

And besides, he's much more interested in what's behind the waterfall - which, as it turns out, isn't solid. Because behind the waterfall is a cave, a void of hollowed out rock and sediment. It becomes all too clear now why the pond outside is so small - the rest of the water is flowing into the cave.

There's a pleased hum of surprise from Link, before he reaches into his pack and pulls out a brightbloom bulb. He tosses it into the darkness within, and when it hits the ground it grows into a flower that glows a soft, ambient green.

Link's fingers closely slowly around his device, as he gives her a slow, sideways look.

He does talk, sometimes. When he wants to. But right now any thought of talking to Renne just makes him want to snap his jaw shut. They haven't gotten off on a good foot, and Link has not yet shed that feeling that she's...judging him.

In short, she's really not someone he wants to talk to. So in response, he just...shrugs.

"Bomb flower," Link says, before tapping on the image of the flower to bring up the Compendium. It's written in Hylian, but he translates: "A dangerous flower that contains explosive elements. Does not mix well with fire or electricity, unless the goal is to blow things up."

And then because Link clearly has no concern for such dire warnings, he promptly pulls one of the flowers out of his pack. Ta-da!

It's probably a little hard to tell what it does do, considering that it's all written in Hylian. He'll end up seeing a few different tabs in the Compendium, before ending up in a section that looks like a collection of notes and tasks - the kind someone would make for themselves.

Then he'll end up looking at what is clearly a map - except, not of any place Donnie would recognise.

This is definitely not going to dissuade him from continuing to explore the tablet's contents as he can in the least. Each new thing that crops up, even without being able to read it, gets an 'oooh' and an excited 'ah!', and his eyes widen once the map comes up.

"Whoa... Is this where you're from?"

She pauses, looking inside the cave, and sees the Brightbloom growing. "Oh, that's a neat trick."

The cave is somewhat tall, but not quite tall enough that Kanna can stand without ducking her head. Still, as the water runs through the place, it glistens and glimmers in the light, giving the features an unearthly cast.

The sound of Kanna's walking, splash, splash, splash, filled the air as she headed deeper into the cave. A few bats, disturbed by the sound, fly past. Kanna dodges them, and they dodge her.

The watercourse is heading downwards for some ways, it looks like. "Don't suppose you brought some rope? Slipping on the way down would be trouble."

Renne shrugs in return.

"I'll accept written feedback."

"Wah peh!"

Shu chokes on her words as Link flourishes his bomb with nary a care.

"Please do not do that! Did you not just tell me it was highly dangerous?! You will hurt yourself." When she has recovered from her alarm, she gingerly squints at the object from a fair distance. "...I truly do not see how this can classify as a real plant. That is a bomb sitting on top of a leaf."

It might not dissuade Donnie, but at this point Link is getting antsy - and he pulls the device back to him. Link still holds it at an angle, so that Donnie can see. But it's clear that Link wants to be in control.

He's willing to share - but only a little.

Then he nods. Yes, it is where he's from. "Hyrule," he says. Then taps on the screen - revealing another map. One that looks to be overlaid over the previous map. "Sky islands," Link adds. Then two more taps, and the map changes to one that looks like a purple-coloured cavernous space. "The Depths."

Link, on the other hand, does not have to duck. He is not tall.

He also reaches into his pack, and pulls out two mysterious looking potions. "Sticky elixir," he says, handing it to her. The other one he swallows immediately before charging ahead.

And indeed, if she watches him closely - it will become clear that Link's not skipping from the wet surface at all. He also clearly has considerable skill in climbing, as he deftly clambers over the rocks. But even when the surface looks utterly drenched, Link's holds are rock solid.

Well. Link could do that, he supposes. Although Renne might be disappointed to find that Link didn't tend to use many more words in written communication than he did in spoken.

But he nods. And mentally adds "Use Danger Tones And Write To Renne About Them" to his list of tasks.
